Glycosidase inhibitors (Table 1.9) delay the digestion of dietary carbohydrate in the form of starch and sucrose into monosaccharides, which can be absorbed from the small intestine. By delaying absorption, these agents lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels and are used for this purpose in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. 

Glucokinase is also an inducible enzyme. The concentration of the enzyme increases in the fed state, when blood glucose and insulin levels are elevated, and decreases in the fasting state, when glucose and insulin are low.

In diabetic mice, administration of 200 or 400 mg/kg of the compound geniposide caused a dose-dependent decrease in blood glucose and insulin levels in diabetic mice (Wu et al. 2009). 

Leucine is known to stimulate insulin secretion by the pancreas. Some individuals are particularly sensitive to leucine and develop hypoglycaemia. The condition can be diagnosed by giving oral leucine and measuring blood glucose and insulin levels in samples collected every fifteen minutes for one hour. In individuals with leucine sensitivity there is a sharp drop in the blood glucose and a rise in the plasma insulin levels.
