Preliminary in vitro and animal studies of the effects of silymarin and silybinin have been carried out with several cancer cell lines. In murine models of skin cancer, silybinin and silymarin were said to reduce tumor initiation and promotion. Induction of apoptosis has also been reported using silymarin in a variety of malignant human cell lines (eg, melanoma, prostate, leukemia cells, bladder transitional-cell papilloma cells, and hepatoma cells). Inhibition of cell growth and proliferation by inducing a Gx cell cycle arrest has also been claimed in cultured human breast and prostate cancer cell lines. The use of milk thistle in the clinical treatment of cancer has not yet been adequately studied but preliminary trials are under way. [Pg.1360]

In addition to its use in preventing tuberculosis, BCG has been used as an immunostimulant or immunomodulator. The degree of safety of this procedure differs with the technique and the purpose for which it is used. In most areas, the use of BCG to counter cancer has proved disappointing, although it is still used to some extent, generally as an adjunct to other forms of treatment (1-7). More encouraging is the nse of intravesical instillation of BCG for recnrrent snperficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, for which it now constitutes the treatment of choice. [Pg.397]

Intravesical instillation of BCG has been nsed to treat superficial bladder carcinoma and interstitial cystitis. Many reports have confirmed the efficacy of BCG in the treatment of transitional cell bladder cancers and have delineated its adverse effects (SEDA-12, 273) (SEDA-13, 278) (SEDA-15, 344) (SEDA-16, 375) (SEDA-17, 366) (SEDA-18, 328) (SEDA-20, 287) (SEDA-21, 328) (SEDA-22, 336). The exact mechanism of its antitumor activity is unknown, but live BCG provokes an inflammatory response that includes activation of macrophages, a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, and stimulation of T and B lymphocytes and natural killer cells. [Pg.397]

Moderate atypia and atypical hyperplasia of the urothelium were first described in 4 pieces of nephroureterectomies performed in 3 CHN patients prior or at time of transplantation [28]. Then, three cases of cancers of the urinary tract were reported the first case, a 28 year old woman with CHN, developed two papillary transitional cell carcinomas in the posterior bladder wall 12 months after a renal transplantation [31] the second case, a 42 year old woman with CHN, presented with hematuria secondary to a papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the right pelvis [32]. The third case was a 49 year old woman previously published as... [Pg.581]
