Back molding

Low-volume production of hudding panels, automotive body panels, and hampers is thermoformed from engineering thermoplastics. ABS, polycarbonate, polycarhonate/ABS, polyamide, and polyesters are thermoformed into in-mold decorating films which are rohoticaUy placed into an injection molding mold. The substrate is back-molded onto the film. [Pg.70]

Film back molding of some plastic parts is an expensive process which has associated difficulties in molding. [Pg.2228]

Composites. The history of phenoHc resin composites goes back to the early development of phenoHc materials, when wood flour, minerals, and colorants were combined with phenoHc resins to produce mol ding compounds. In later appHcations, resin varnishes were developed for kraft paper and textile fabrics to make decorative and industrial laminates. Although phenoHcs have been well characterized in glass-reinforced composites, new developments continue in this area, such as new systems for Hquid-injection molding (LIM) and sheet-molding compounds (SMC). More compHcated composite systems are based on aramid and graphite fibers. [Pg.307]

Floor mats, carpet backing, and reHef mats have been traditional markets for ground mbber where the material adds resHiency at a lower cost compared to virgin compounds. Certain molded products have also been markets for ground mbber. An interesting use is the manufacture of lawn soaker... [Pg.16]

The rigidi d thermoplastic sheet - Tiocess combines thermoplastic sheet vacuum forming with a spray-up or cold press molding process to add a thermoset composite stmctural backing to a decorative thermoplastic skin. Large parts such as bathtubs, hot tubs, recreation vehicle components, and camper tops have been produced by this process. [Pg.97]

Pig. 2. (a) The cell mount design of the integrated PV array of Pigure 1, which uses laminated conductive and insulating layers on top of an aluminium substrate in a printed circuit board-type panel (7). The array produces 20 kW at 20°C ambient and 850 W/m direct sunlight, and measures 155 m. The lens is a molded acryUc Presnel lens parquet mounted on the front of the array stmcture. The PV panel is mounted on the back of the array stmcture and is... [Pg.105]

In more recent years, molded flexible foam products are becoming more popular. The bulk of the molded flexible urethane foam is employed in the transportation industry, where it is highly suitable for the manufacture of seat cushions, back cushions, and bucket-seat padding. TDI prepolymers were used in flexible foam mol ding ia conjunction with polyether polyols. The introduction of organotin catalysts and efficient siHcone surfactants faciHtates one-shot foam mol ding, which is the most economical production method. [Pg.348]

In many instances the friction material mix is integrally molded into holes within the backing plate or shoe. Painting of the final assembly, less common in North America, is the rule in Europe and Asia. For controlling brake squeal, noise insulators are widely used. These noise insulating layers are bonded or mechanically attached to the back side of the friction material backing plate. [Pg.275]

Cast molding is an increasingly used manufacturing process for both rigid gas-permeable and hydrogel contact lenses. In this process, two molds, made from a variety of plastics, are used. A female mold forms the lens front surface (convex) and a male mold forms the lens back surface (concave). The plastic molds are made from metal tools or dies that are usually stainless steel, precision lathed, and polished to the specified lens design. A variety of mold materials are used. The polymerized, hardened lens is released from the mated molds and is processed in much the same way as the spin-cast lenses described above. [Pg.107]

In addition to electrical uses, epoxy casting resins are utilized in the manufacture of tools, ie, contact and match molds, stretch blocks, vacuum-forrning tools, and foundry patterns, as weU as bench tops and kitchen sinks. Systems consist of a gel-coat formulation designed to form a thin coating over the pattern which provides a perfect reproduction of the pattern detail. This is backed by a heavily filled epoxy system which also incorporates fiber reinforcements to give the tool its strength. For moderate temperature service, a Hquid bisphenol A epoxy resin with an aHphatic amine is used. For higher temperature service, a modified system based on an epoxy phenol novolak and an aromatic diamine hardener may be used. [Pg.371]

An example of the contribution of polar interactions between an acrylic PSA and a substrate is shown in Fig. 6. By copolymerizing iso-octylacrylate and acrylic acid, using a monomer ratio of, respectively, 95/5 and 90/10, two otherwise identical PSAs were made. The PSAs were laminated to both sides of a foam core to make an attachment tape as used in the automotive industry for the application of body side moldings to a car. One side of the foam tape was laminated against an aluminum foil backing. The other side was laminated against an automotive paint-coated panel to make the final test sample. The test sample was allowed to... [Pg.489]

Contour packaging is also called skin packaging. It is package in which thin plastic film or sheet is formed over a product and usually simultaneously sealed to a paperboard or plastic backing. The product serves as a mold. [Pg.238]
