Solution Deposition of Thin Films. Chemical methods of preparation may also be used for the fabrication of ceramic thin films (qv). MetaHo-organic precursors, notably metal alkoxides (see Alkoxides, metal) and metal carboxylates, are most frequently used for film preparation by sol-gel or metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) solution deposition processes (see Sol-GEL technology). These methods involve dissolution of the precursors in a mutual solvent control of solution characteristics such as viscosity and concentration, film deposition by spin-casting or dip-coating, and heat treatment to remove volatile organic species and induce crystaHhation of the as-deposited amorphous film into the desired stmcture. [Pg.346]

Cast molding is an increasingly used manufacturing process for both rigid gas-permeable and hydrogel contact lenses. In this process, two molds, made from a variety of plastics, are used. A female mold forms the lens front surface (convex) and a male mold forms the lens back surface (concave). The plastic molds are made from metal tools or dies that are usually stainless steel, precision lathed, and polished to the specified lens design. A variety of mold materials are used. The polymerized, hardened lens is released from the mated molds and is processed in much the same way as the spin-cast lenses described above. [Pg.107]

Metal and polysilicon films are formed by a chemical-vapor deposition process using organometallic gases that react at the surface of the IC structure. Various metal silicide films may also be deposited in this manner by reaction with the surface of the silicon wafer to form metal silicides. Glass and pol3uner films are deposited or spin cast or both, as are photoresist films (those of a photosensitive material). This process is accomplished by applying a liquid polymer onto a rapidly rotating wafer. The exact method used varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and usually remains proprietary. [Pg.329]

Zink et al. used a blend of polystyrene (hPS) and its deuterated counterpart (dPS), both of molecular weight 1.95 x 106 (abbreviated 1.95 M). The average volume fraction (4>dPS) of deuterated polystyrene was 30%. The polymers were dissolved in toluene and spin cast on thin silicon wafers (about 10 x 10 mm), the resulting film thickness being about 300 nm. The samples were annealed at 245°C for 8 days, and the measurement of the resulting depth profiles was conducted by NRA using a monoenergetic 700 keV 3He beam. As an example of the latter technique, Volkman et al. demonstrated the feasibility of using spin-cast zinc oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in 1-dodecanethiol to fabricate a functional transistor.44 The zinc oxide was deposited on a thermally grown silicon dioxide layer on a conventional silicon wafer, with thermally evaporated gold source and drain electrodes.
