Cold-press molding

Reinforcing material, which may be glass mat or woven fabric, is cut to shape and placed in the GRP or light metal mold. Then the resin is poured in and the press closed with a strong deceleration toward the end of the stroke. The resin displaces air and impregnates the reinforcement. The heat of polymerization generated accelerates the cure of the resin, giving a relatively short cycle time. [Pg.883]

The rigidi d thermoplastic sheet - Tiocess combines thermoplastic sheet vacuum forming with a spray-up or cold press molding process to add a thermoset composite stmctural backing to a decorative thermoplastic skin. Large parts such as bathtubs, hot tubs, recreation vehicle components, and camper tops have been produced by this process. [Pg.97]

Terrel, et al (33,3A 35). Another approach uses SC to fabricate various block shapes and is aimed at a variety of uses particularly suited for the Middle East. Until recently, all attempts to develop a cold, press-mold sulfur-based technology have been unsuccessful. However, this barrier appears to have been broken with the promising technology being developed at the University of Washington, Seattle. Through careful formulation,... [Pg.244]

Cold Press Molding. Occasionally the mix may be placed in a cold mold and pressed at about 345 kPa (50 psi). The cure cycle is considerably longer. [Pg.685]

A cold-pressed molding of a PAES with poly(phenylene sulfide) as an additive component does not melt even at temperatures of above 360°C, although polyCphenylene sulfide) has a melting temperature of280-290°C. [Pg.250]

Cold press molding represent compression molding that involves only a moderate investment in equipment and using a lower-powered press than with large series processes. Molds can be made from RP materials rather than from high-quality steel. The reinforcement is generally mat which can be preformed if necessary fabric can also be used. Molds can be at ambient temperature or heated to 80C (176F). Cold press... [Pg.280]

Epoxy/reinforced can be used for molds for open (contact), and low-pressure cold-press molding. Epoxy molds have poor temperature control and tend to be fragile. Compoimding with a metal filling improves heat conductivity but, in general, epoxy molds should only be used for short runs or for prototype parts, when quality is not the key criterion, but cost and flexibility are paramount. [Pg.425]

Cold molding or cold-press molding. This process is a step up from the open-mold processes previously discussed in that it is a closed-mold process. Therefore, the parts are finished on both sides. However, the process does not quite produce the surface quality required by the transportation industry. Hence, cold-press-molded parts are more hkely to be used for interior parts. To a limited degree, this process can provide a part with some inside structure such as ribs, etc. However, it has poor tolerance control and, therefore, somewhat limited application. [Pg.638]

Cold-press molds are plastic, which makes them comparatively inexpensive. Relatively long cycle times and postmolding machining result in parts which are more expensive than compression-molded parts, but less costly than parts produced by the lay-up or spray-up processes. [Pg.638]
