NOISE INSULATION

In many instances the friction material mix is integrally molded into holes within the backing plate or shoe. Painting of the final assembly, less common in North America, is the rule in Europe and Asia. For controlling brake squeal, noise insulators are widely used. These noise insulating layers are bonded or mechanically attached to the back side of the friction material backing plate. 

There is much interest and concern for noise/vibration-free brake systems and there is much activity toward friction couples having reduced noise/vibration properties. In addition to better noise insulators, brake modifications in the form of different materials, different designs, and improved friction materials formulations and/or processes are being developed and implemented. 

Noise control is worth mentioning. The turboexpander and axial compressors are noise producers and consideration must be given to the need for providing noise abatement. Silencers on vents and noise insulation housings on machines should be considered and have been proven effective.

Linnecessary noise, these should be cleaned regularly. Imbalance, whether due to dirt or to other causes, should be corrected by adjustment. Detective bearings should be adjusted or replaced. Struts and sharp edges in front of an impeller should be avoided. Impact noise insulation should be introduced between fan room and floor structure and between fan room and connecting ducts. The fan unit should be enclosed, with satisfactory airborne sound insulation as the objective. 

Normally there is some connection between the airflow rate and noise and vibration generation. This could modify the building construction either to prevent spreading or to diminish the levels of noise and vibrations from the air-handling units. This naturally includes all parts of these units, i.e., fans, pumps, and valves (see Chapters 5 and 9). The demands on noise insulation also include the noise and vibrations from the process equipment, which often has a higher level of noise and vibration than the ventilation system. 

Chemical products used in crafts include man-made mineral fibres, which are used for heat and noise insulation purposes in buildings. In addition to employees in the mineral fibre industiy and insulation installers, numerous other craftspeople (e.g. painters, bricklayers, roofers) and also some DIY users come into contact with artificial mineral fibres. 

The technical suitability of insulation materials is described by a series of technical parameters relating to the material (heat conductivity and heat storage capacities, damp protection, fire protection class, noise-insulating effect, properties related to building biology, e g. content of hazardous substances such as flame retardants and insecticides). Technical advantage/function Basalt rock wool is used for noise insulation in automotive exhaust units for the purposes of noise absorption. Vital technical requirements are temperature resistance, noise absorption behaviour, corrosion resistance and mechanical stability. Now textile continuous glass fibres and biosoluble mineral wools are also used for this application in exhaust units. 

Noise and vibration measurements are made with microphones and accelerometers. Sometimes, sophisticated instruments like laser vibrometers are used for NVH work. Common noise fixes include cutting slots and/or chamfers on the brake pads and linings, the application of constrained layer damping noise insulators to the back of the brake pad shoe plates, and detuning the resonant frequency of mechanical brake corner components.

Construction Roofing and tile underlay, thermal and noise insulation, floor pads, house wrap, etc. 

Coatings, films, glues, sealants, electric insulation, structural articles packing, heat and noise-insulating foams. 

Better noise insulation is needed between the cab and sleeper berth, as well as the inside and outside of the cab. 

For insulation of floors in addition to heat insulation, a certain degree of sound insulation must also be considered, which is usually done by means of a floating floor cover laying over an intermediate layer of elastified foamed boards, covered with a layer of PE film. Underfloor heating in houses, with an insulation layer below the underfloor heating, is usually combined with impact-noise insulations. Over hot (steam transfer) pipes, usually XLPE foams are used. 

For the pour-in place and foam technique, there is a group of characteristic rigid PU foam applications available, however, their largest consumption area is in the insulation of refrigerators and freezers, but not that much in the construction industry. Standard two-component formulations with special adaptations, or one-component systems that cure by reaction with the moisture existing in the atmosphere, are available. The method produces highly effective thermal and noise insulation as well as physical reinforcement, although the foams produced are less uniform than those produced in-plant.
