Many cellulose esters, such as cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, and mixed esters of cellulose acetate butyrate, have found popularity in commercial scale production. Many new esters continue to appear in the market. Traditionally, esterification is conducted on a heterogeneous system (topo-chemical reaction) however, homogeneous systems employing mixed organic solvents have recently been developed. For example, Ikeda et al. [17] demonstrated that homogeneous esterification and acetalization of cellulose in LiCF DM AC can be achieved.

Traditionally, small-scale consumers of phosgene had little choice but to buy it from Van De Mark. Because of its toxicity, small or zero inventories of phosgene are usually maintained, although it is easily liquefied. 

PLA fibers are increasingly penetrating markets traditionally occupied by petroleum-based synthetics. The rationale for this trend is the increasing public concern over the depletion of natural resources and the accompanying atmospheric pollution. It is evident, however, that the use of aimuaUy renewable crops as a means of producing the materials we need to sustain our everyday lives will continue to accelerate.
