The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the environment is of obvious concern and, apart from specific occupational environments, human exposure to these compounds derives from combustion products released into the atmosphere. Estimates of the total annual benzo[aJpyrene emissions in the United States range from 900 tons (19) to about 1300 tons (20). These totals are derived from heat and power generation (37-38%), open-refuse burning (42-46%), coke production (15-19%) and motor vehicle emissions (1-1.5%) (19,20). Since the vast majority of these emissions are from stationary sources, local levels of air pollution obviously vary. Benzo[aJpyrene levels of less than 1 pg/1,000 m correspond to clean air (20). At this level, it can be estimated that the average person would inhale about 0.02 pg of benzo[aJpyrene per day, and this could increase to 1.5 pg/day in polluted air (21). [Pg.10]

Two questions arise from this result. Do lobsters use only chemical and not mechanosensory information, and why do lobsters not use ground reference and head up-current Since turbulent odor dispersal is based on water flow patterns, we must investigate the role of microflow patterns in plume orientation behavior. As for ground reference, we speculate that the flow patterns of the lobster s natural environment may be too complex to allow for efficient rheotactic behavior in odor source localization. This complexity is most likely caused by a mismatch between turbulent scales and animal body size and sampling scales. [Pg.162]

Sulfur Emissicms Sulfur present in a fuel is released as SO2, a known contributor to acid rain deposition. By adding limestone or dolomite to a fluidized bed, much of this can be captured as calcium sulfate, a dry nonhazardous solid. As limestone usually contains over 40 percent calcium, compared to only 20 percent in dolomite, it is the preferred sorbent, resulting in lower transportation costs for the raw mineral and the resulting ash product. Moreover, the high magnesium content of the dolomite makes the ash unsuitable for some building applications and so reduces its potential for utilization. Whatever sorbent is selected, for economic reasons it is usually from a source local to the FBC plant. If more than one sorbent is available, plant trials are needed to determine the one most suitable, as results from laboratory-scale reactivity assessments are unreliable. [Pg.30]

A much more ambitious database that builds on the IUBMB classification is BRENDA, maintained by the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Cologne. In addition to the data provided by the ENZYME database, the BRENDA curators have extracted a large body of information from the enzyme literature and incorporated it into the database. The database format strives to be readable by both humans and machines. The categories of data stored in BRENDA comprise the EC-number, systematic and recommended names, synonyms, CAS-registry numbers, the reaction catalyzed, a list of known substrates and products, the natural substrates, specific activities, KM values, pH and temperature optima, cofactor and ion requirements, inhibitors, sources, localization, purification schemes, molecular weight, subunit structure, posttranslational modifications, enzyme stability, database links, and last but not least an extensive bibliography. Currently, BRENDA holds entries for approximately 3500 different enzymes. [Pg.152]

As the technologies for using wood as a fuel have advanced, so has the realization that wood is a suitable alternative to fossil fuels. It is widespread, renewable, and carbon neutral —meaning that when it is burned it releases only the amount of carbon dioxide it absorbed while it was growing. Not only that, unlike oil and gas, wood can usually be sourced locally. [Pg.226]

Rotation Modulation Collimators (RMC s) were originally introduced in X-ray astronomy to provide accurate source localizations over extended fields. This role has since been taken over by the grazing incidence telescope systems. The potential of the RMC s as wide field monitors have recently been demonstrated by the WATCH instruments on GRAN AT and EURECA. It now appears likely, that for use on large, 3-axis stabilized spacecraft, a pinhole camera system may provide better sensitivity than an RMC-system of corresponding physical dimensions. But due to its simplicity, low data rate, and ability to work on spin stabilized (micro)satellites, the RMC wide field monitor may still have a role to play in the X-ray astronomy of the future. [Pg.20]
