Recreational surfaces must provide certain performance characteristics with acceptable costs, lifetimes, and appearance. Arbitrary but useful distinctions may be made for classification purposes, depending on the principal function a covering intended primarily to provide an attractive surface for private leisure activities, eg, patio surfaces a surface designed for service in a specific sport, eg, track surfaces or a grass-like surface designed for a broad range of heavy-duty recreational activities, including professional athletics, eg, artificial turf for outdoor sports. [Pg.531]

Small tire chips have also been utilized as a soil amendment to improve athletic playing fields (see Recreational surfaces). A patented process marketed under the trade name Rebound (fai Tire) combines cmmb mbber from scrap tires with composted organic material to reduce soil compaction, resulting in better athletic playing surfaces (52). Installations have been made in Florida, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Virginia, and Wisconsin. [Pg.20]

Wlienever anything is set in motion, there must be some type of propulsive force that moves it. Propulsion is a key element of many activities, including athletic events, recreation, transportation, weapons, and space exploration. This article explains the basic principles involved in any propulsion system, differentiates the types of propulsion systems, and discusses some practical aspects of propulsion. [Pg.965]

Flinn et al.66 conducted an interesting study using nine recreational athletes who were caffeine naive. A 10 mg/kg dose was administered 3 h prior to testing on a cycle ergometer. These researchers attributed their positive results to (1) the use of caffeine naive subjects, (2) high doses of caffeine, (3) the timing of the dose, 3 h prior to exercise allowing FFA levels to peak, and (4) the use of recreational rather than elite athletes. [Pg.247]

When ingested, GHB stimulates dopamine release, leading to pleasurable effects such as euphoria, muscle relaxation, and heightened sexual desire. It also has CNS depressant effects resulting in sedation and hypnosis. Because GHB was reported to enhance grovrth hormone release, it has been used as a steroid alternative by body builders and athletes. Athletes also have used GHB as a sleep aid because they believe it promotes rapid recovery from vigorous repetitive competition. These properties and the availability of GHB in dietary supplements led to growing recreational abuse of the... [Pg.1336]

Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for energy for adult males and females are 3100 and 2400 kcal/day, respectively, but these amounts are generally exceeded by active competitive athletes, though not necessarily by recreational athletes. RDAs, of course, depend on body size, and many athletes have high body mass indices (BMIs) without being obese so the highly muscled athlete may need much more than the RDA, while the endurance-type, more aerobic athlete may need more than the RDA but not as much as the high BMI well-muscled types. [Pg.4]

The balance between the two types of essential PFAs is best assessed by determining the dietary ratio of these PFAs because the ratio drives the syntheses of the different eicosanoids in the tissues. Low intakes of omega-3 FAs result in an increase in the formation of omega-6 FAs that feed into eicosanoids of this series." This balance has important consequences for athletes because greater production of one type of eicosanoid may impact immune defense, tissue healing, heart function, and other organ functions that affect athletic performance — primarily of top-level competitors rather than of recreational athletes. [Pg.8]
