Playing fields

By way of comparison, for natural grass playing fields in late autumn ranges from about 75 for wet fields to 280 for fro2en turf (8). The intermediate values observed depend on soil type, moisture, condition, and other variables. 

The Magic Carpet system (AstroTurf Industries) (13) is a novel installation technique in which turf and adherent underpad are unwound from a core and floated onto the subbase of a playing field by air pressure suppHed from ducts in the base. To expose the subbase for other sports uses, the turf—pad combination is roUed up and stored at the edge of the field or in a recessed storage compartment. 

Small tire chips have also been utilized as a soil amendment to improve athletic playing fields (see Recreational surfaces). A patented process marketed under the trade name Rebound (fai Tire) combines cmmb mbber from scrap tires with composted organic material to reduce soil compaction, resulting in better athletic playing surfaces (52). Installations have been made in Florida, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Virginia, and Wisconsin. 

The introduction of the Alkali Act in 1863 to curb the adverse health effects produced from emissions of HCl from the Leblanc sodium carbonate process was discussed in Chapter 2. This act stated the particular steps companies had to take to reduce emissions. Whilst this approach, if used wisely, could ensure the adoption of the latest best practice it tends to stifle innovative solutions to problems. Also whilst helping to ensure an even playing field it may not be necessary or even appropriate to adopt the same technical solution to different processes in different locations. 

Creating a level playing field in the public mind ... 

It is unlikely to do so, ifthe industry stick to its stance (whether correct or not) that the present technology is the best, that if the playing field were level, it would be competitive and that past records show it to be at least as safe as competitive energy sources... 

However, the corporationformedto implement this declaration ofinterdependence has failed to provide information to the public, news media, local, state and national political representatives, or others. There will be no level playing field for use of nuclear technology unless there is a well-coordinated national effort to provide accurate information to the public and to correct misinformation.

The standards set by this Protocol are in fact already met by all West European chlor-alkali plants and the West European producers had already voluntarily committed to eschew mercury technology for new plants. The main value of the Protocol is in setting challenging standards to be met by the producers in Eastern Europe -particularly in the countries of the former Soviet Union where emission levels were recently, in some cases, still more than 50 times higher than required by the Protocol. It also has value in setting a level playing field as between North America and Europe. 

The contemporary lawn does not deviate from this pattern. As shown in Table 2.1, the dominant turf grasses of the United States-used in lawns, playing fields, parks, and golf courses-are all introduced species. Moreover, many are species that arrived in the New World as forage plants for cattle. In... 

Soon, my adventures in the Clinical Investigation Division began. I spent the first few days learning the names and responsibilities of staff members and observing tests with EA 2277. Before long, however, I became impatient to get off the bench and onto the playing field.

Calcium hydroxide [Ca (OH) ] is known as slaked or hydrated lime and is formed by exposing calcium oxide to water. Slaked lime is less caustic than quick lime. Therefore, it is used to line football fields. (Unslaked lime, CaO, is very caustic when wet, and if it is used on playing fields, players may receive caustic burns.) Calcium hydroxide has many uses, including as an ingredient for stonemasons mortar, cements, whitewash, and soil conditioner (high pH), as a food additive, and as a human depilatory. 

The provision of efficacy data on biocidal products is a core data requirement for all product types. This information takes on central importance within the overall legislation. It not only indicates that a biocidal product can adequately control microorganisms in an application but in defining an efficacy concentration (or range) and method of application it also describes the playing field limits for the development of the associated human and environmental risk assessments.

This pollution is still a significant problem in St Helens in North West England, which had many alkali works. Playing fields, homes and industrial estates have all now been constructed on the tips from those works, but sulphide still leaches into the streams which run through the waste tips.

This is essentially the same position I take with my psychotherapy patients and my psychotherapist students. I try to convince both groups that dreams are unusual mental products that teach us volumes about the normal workings of the mind and that contain all of the seeds of abnormality within them. Because dreams are so psychotic they put me and my most deranged patients on the same playing field. By thinking about my dreams—and theirs—I can more easily imagine what it is like to be psychotic when awake. 

Should athletes be allowed to genetically dope their muscles for better performance If so, should there be two sets of Olympics One for the doped and another for the non-doped Many Olympians may already benefit from natural muta tions that enhance their performance. Why not level the playing field by making such enhancements available to all atheletes ... 

Modern measurements show that an atom has a diameter of roughly 1CT10 m and that a nucleus has a diameter of about 10-15 m. It s difficult to imagine from these numbers alone, though, just how small a nucleus really is. For comparison purposes, if an atom were the size of a large domed stadium, the nucleus would be approximately the size of a small pea in the center of the playing field.
