Asymmetric flat sheet

Zeolite/polymer mixed-matrix membranes can be fabricated into dense film, asymmetric flat sheet, or asymmetric hollow fiber. Similar to commercial polymer membranes, mixed-matrix membranes need to have an asymmetric membrane geometry with a thin selective skin layer on a porous support layer to be commercially viable. The skin layer should be made from a zeohte/polymer mixed-matrix material to provide the membrane high selectivity, but the non-selective porous support layer can be made from the zeohte/polymer mixed-matrix material, a pure polymer membrane material, or an inorganic membrane material. [Pg.341]

The study of dual-layer asyimnetric hollow-fiber membranes formed by the phase-inversion process started in the late 1980s. In 1987, Yanagimoto invented dual-layer asymmetric flat-sheet and hollow-fiber membranes to improve the antifouling properties of membranes for ultrafiltration and microfiltration (Yanagimoto, 1987, 1988). Since then, Kuzumoto and Nitta (1989) simultaneously extruded inner and outer dopes containing the same polymer but different solvents and additives to improve water permeability. Ekiner et al. (1992) disclosed the procedures for the fabrication of dual-layer hollow fibers for gas separation. Li et al. (2002) developed a delamination-fiee dual-layer asymmetric... [Pg.831]

The results of gas separation studies using integrally skinned asymmetric flat sheet membranes prepared from ethylene oxide functionalized PPO are shown in Table 18. These membranes were prepared from a solution of the modified PPO (25 and 30 wt/wt %) in tetramethylurea, dimethylacetamide or... [Pg.128]

The second major membrane type is a composite. Starting with a loose asymmetric membrane, usually a UF membrane, a coating is applied which is polymerized in situ to become the salt rejecflng membrane. This process is used for most high-performance flat-sheet RO membranes, as well as for many commercial nanofiltration membranes. The chemistry of the leading RO membranes is known, but... [Pg.2035]

The geometries for asymmetric mixed-matrix membranes include flat sheets, hollow fibers and thin-fihn composites. The flat sheet asymmetric mixed-matrix membranes are formed into spirally wound modules and the hollow fiber asymmetric mixed-matrix membranes are formed into hollow fiber modules. The thin-film composite mixed-matrix membranes can be fabricated into either spirally wound or hollow fiber modules. The thin-film composite geometry of mixed-matrix membranes enables selection of different membrane materials for the support layer and low-cost production of asymmetric mixed-matrix membranes utilizing a relatively high-cost zeolite/polymer separating layer on the support layer. [Pg.343]

Kulprathipanja and coworkers reported the preparation of integrally skinned siUcaUte-1/cellulose acetate flat sheet asymmetric mixed-matrix membranes via phase inversion technique in 1992 [73]. The O2/N2 separation performance of these membranes was investigated. It was demonstrated that the separation factor of... [Pg.344]

Polymeric materials are still the most widely used membranes for gas separation, and for specific apphcations the separation technology is well established (see Section 4.6). Producing the membranes either as composites with a selective skin layer on flat sheets or as asymmetric hollow fibers are well-known techniques. Figure 4.5 shows an SEM picture of a typical composite polymeric membrane with a selective, thin skin layer of poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS) on a support structure of polypropylene (PP). The polymeric membrane development today is clearly into more carefully tailored membranes for specific... [Pg.74]

Most UF membranes are asymmetric, having a thin separating layer or skin layer with small pores on one side of the membrane, and a much thicker layer with larger pores below the membrane which provides structural support with minimum flow resistance. Asymmetric membranes are manufactured by wet phase inversion casting. In this process, a casting solution of a polymer in a water-miscible solvent is spread in a thin layer onto a flat surface and then immersed in water. The water causes extraction of solvent and precipitation of the polymer as a porous flat sheet. The skin layer is formed on the upper surface that was in direct contact with water, and the underlying... [Pg.3220]

C. acidophilia was Immobilized In asymmetric UF membranes by several methods without loss of enzyme activity. The results Indicated that no marked decrease of activity was observed after 8 to 9 months of wet storage at 4 C. The membrane had a flat sheet configuration and were tested In standard ultrafiltration systems. [Pg.451]

The spinning of asymmetric hollow fibers with the skin on the inside closely resembles the procedure used in casting flat-sheet membranes. Figure 3.1510 is a schematic diagram of a spinneret used to spin these fibers. The degassed and filtered polymer solution is forced under pressure into a coaxial tube spinneret. The liquid is extruded through an annular orifice and the hollow fiber (still liquid) is stabilized and precipitated by an internal coagulating fluid (usually water) which flows out the center tube. [Pg.151]

Asymmetric membranes are made from solution in the form of a hollow fiber, but the process used to form a thin, pore free dense layer on these hollow fibers is not disclosed.45 46 However, US patent 4,440,64312 describes a unique process for producing pore-free polyimide composite membranes. An asymmetric polyimide porous substrate is prepared from solution. When fully imi-dized, the substrate is insoluble. The substrate can now be coated with a poly-amic acid from dilute solution (— 1 %). When fully imidized, the resultant polyimide coating becomes the separating layer. This process allows use of the same or different polyimides for the substrate and the separating membrane. While the examples in the reference describe preparation of flat sheet membranes, this process could be used to prepare hollow fiber membranes. [Pg.579]
