Analysis of Patterns

A review of the OSHA log is the most common method to determine pattern analysis. However, you must remember that these are only recordable injuries and do no reflect first aid cases, near misses, etc. These logs are not the only useful source of information. Records of hazard analysis can be analyzed for patterns— for example, inspection records and employee hazard reporting records [5]. [Pg.246]

Records being analyzed must contain enough information to allow for a specific pattern. A workplace with few employees or very little hazardous work may require a review of 3 to 5 years of information. Because [Pg.246]

Gather evidence from many sources during an investigation. Get information from witnesses and reports and observation. Get copies of all reports (documents containing normal operating procedures, flow diagrams, etc., maintenance charts, or reports of difficulties or abnormalities). Keep complete and accurate notes. Record pre-incident conditions, the incident sequence, and post-incident conditions. In addition, document the location of employee, witnesses, equipment, energy sources, and hazardous materials. [Pg.247]

In some investigations, a particular physical or chemical exposure, principle, or property may explain the sequence of events. [Pg.247]

The first three of the above problems are particularly relevant for near miss reporting, because it requires why information to backtrack the root causes any selection bias in terms of actual consequences must be changed into one in terms of potential consequences and finally safety management must switch from ad hoc analysis of anecdotes to structural analysis of patterns of causes. [Pg.54]

The determination of crystal structures of small molecules has now become routine provided that suitable crystals are available [362,363,364,365]. The advent of higher power X-ray sources, more synchronized light, and better recording devices has meant that smaller and smaller crystals can be solved by diffraction methods. At the same time, the analysis of patterns from larger and larger molecules has become easier so that the limit on the use of X-ray crystallography is the production of crystals. [Pg.38]

Predictive methods aimed at extracting secondary structural information from the linear primary sequence make extensive use of neural networks, traditionally used for analysis of patterns and trends. Basically, a neural network provides computational processes the ability to learn in an attempt to approximate human learning versus following instructions blindly in a sequential marmer. Every nemal network has an input layer and an output layer. In the case of secondary structure prediction, the input layer would be information from the sequence itself, and the output layer would be the probabilities of whether a particular residue could form a particular structure. Between the input and output layers would be one or more hidden layers where the actual learning would take place. This is accomplished by providing a training data set for the network. Here, an appropriate training set would be all sequences for which three-dimensional structures have been deduced. The network can process this information to look for what are possibly weak relationships between an amino acid sequence and the structures they can form in a particular context. A more complete discussion of neural networks as applied to secondary structure prediction can be found in Kneller et al. (1990). [Pg.264]

In parallel with the description and analysis of patterns in nature, the ecology of microbial communities needs further research. Two aspects deserve particular attention disentangling what determines the number of species that a given system can host and assessing whether the presence of some species (or any other taxa) prevents or facilitates the entrance of other species in the local assemblage. [Pg.345]

New immunohistochemical methods permit more precise analysis of patterns of prechondrogenesis in developing limbs of amphibians and for comparison in the paired fins of a teleost fish. The monoclonal antibody 3B3 was used to map the distribution of chondroitin-6-S04, a molecular marker of the prechondrogenic condensations. Thus we analysed early endoskeletal patterning of the paired fin buds in the zebra fish (Danio) and of the limb buds of two urodeles Salamandrella, a hynobiid basal urodele, and the axolotl, an advanced form) and of the anuran, Xenopus. The overall aim was to throw light on the developmental basis of tetrapod limb evolution. [Pg.377]
