Tables 3.5 and 3.6 show that US consumption of nitrogen products has been flat to growing slightly since the mid-1990 s. It should be noted that ammonia consumption in the United States decreased by 1 percent per year from 1996 to 2001. However US ammonia consumption was forecast to increase by 2 percent per year from 2003 through 2005223. To maintain the US ammonia supply at the level that is needed to satisfy consumers, ammonia imports have increased whenever the operating rate declines (as shown in Figure 3.18). Therefore ammonia imports to the USA increase whenever natural gas prices increase (see Figure 3.19). Western and Central European countries experience similar dynamics in their ammonia markets. A significant alkyl pyridine is 2-pentylpyridine, which is found, for example, in meat. It may be formed by ring closure of deca-2,4-dienals by ammonia. Important components of cocoa, bread, aromatic rice, popcorn and other cereal products are 2-acetylpyridine (8-172) and 6-acetyl-l,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine, which occurs in tautomeric equilibrium with 6-acetyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyridine. Catalytic gas-phase reactions play an important role in many bulk chemical processes, such as in the production of methanol, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid. In most processes, the effective area of the catalyst is critically important. Still another type of adsorption system is that in which either a proton transfer occurs between the adsorbent site and the adsorbate or a Lewis acid-base type of reaction occurs. An important group of solids having acid sites is that of the various silica-aluminas, widely used as cracking catalysts. The sites center on surface aluminum ions but could be either proton donor (Brpnsted acid) or Lewis acid in type. Commercially, urea is produced by the direct dehydration of ammonium carbamate, NH2COONH4, at elevated temperature and pressure. The ammonium chloride process, developed by Asahi Glass, is a variation of the basic Solvay process (9—11). It requires the use of soHd sodium chloride but obtains higher sodium conversions (+90%) than does the Solvay process. This is especially important ia Japan, where salt is imported as a soHd. The major difference from the Solvay process is that here the ammonium chloride produced is crystallized by cooling and through the addition of soHd sodium chloride.
