M.p. 190-192 C. The enolic form of 3-oxo-L-gulofuranolactone. It can be prepared by synthesis from glucose, or extracted from plant sources such as rose hips, blackcurrants or citrus fruits. Easily oxidized. It is essential for the formation of collagen and intercellular material, bone and teeth, and for the healing of wounds. It is used in the treatment of scurvy. Man is one of the few mammals unable to manufacture ascorbic acid in his liver. Used as a photographic developing agent in alkaline solution. [Pg.43]

Two molecules of vitamin A are formed from one molecule of -carotene. Vitamin A crystallizes in pale yellow needles m.p. 64 C. It is optically inactive. It is unstable in solution when heated in air, but comparatively stable without aeration. Vitamin A is manufactured by extraction from fish-liver oils and by synthesis from / -ionone. The role of vitamin A in vision seems to be different from its systemic function. See also relincne and rhodopsin. [Pg.422]

The preparation of 2 4-dimethyl-3 5-dicarbethoxypyrrole (II) is an example of the Knorr synthesis of pyrrole derivatives, involving the reaction of an -aminoketone (or a derivative thereof) with a reactive methylene ketone (or a derivative thereof). The stages In the present synthesis from ethyl acetoacetate (I) may be represented as follows ... [Pg.839]

Dear readers please take notice Not once has the flask left the stirplate since the formamide and P2P reaction started up to the last point where MDA freebase was liberated. That s pretty damn convenient. Technically, the Leuckart reaction can continue as a one pot synthesis from the last part of P2P cleanup right up to final product. [Pg.115]

Tetracyclines are produced by various Streptomyces strains and are extensively applied in human and veterinary medicine. They display a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity in combination with low toxicity and can be applied orally. The most commonly prescribed tetracycline drugs are tetracycline itself and oxytetracycline, an oxygenated derivative, which are directly isolated from fermentation liquors, and doxycycline whose partial synthesis from oxy-... [Pg.316]

Ketones can be prepared by trapping (transmetallation) the acyl palladium intermediate 402 with organometallic reagents. The allylic chloride 400 is car-bonylated to give the mixed diallylic ketone 403 in the presence of allyltri-butylstannane (401) in moderate yields[256]. Alkenyl- and arylstannanes are also used for ketone synthesis from allylic chlorides[257,258]. Total syntheses of dendrolasin (404)f258] and manoalide[259] have been carried out employing this reaction. Similarly, formation of the ketone 406 takes place with the alkylzinc reagent 405[260],... [Pg.343]

Tryptophans can also be prepared by reduction of a,(3-dehydrotryptophans. These can be obtained by a classical azlactone type synthesis from derivatives of indole-3-carboxaldehyde. These reactions usually rquire an iV-EW substituent and the yields are modest[15]. [Pg.131]
