PERKIN, SIR WILLIAM HENRY (1838-1907). An English chemist who was the first to make a synthetic dyestuff (1856). He studied under Hofman at the Royal College of London. Perkin s first dye was called mauveine, but he proceeded to synthesize alizarin and coumarin, the first synthetic perfume. In 1907 he was awarded the first Perkin Medal, which has ever since been awarded by the American Division of the Society of Chemical Industry for distinguished work in chemistry. Not withstanding the fact that Perkin patented and manufactured mauve dye in England, the center of the synthetic dye industry shifted to Germany, where it remained until 1914. [Pg.1226]

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (CCE) was spun out of the Coca-Cola Company in 1986. The goal was to consolidate the many independent bottling groups in the Coca-Cola system. The secondary goal was to improve the asset efficiency of the parent company. On Eebruary 24,2010, just four years after the creation of CCE, the Coca-Cola Company and CCE entered talks to sell CCE s North American division to Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola paid more than 15 billion dollars to reacquire CCE in North America, including redemption of Coca-Cola s 35 percent shareholding in CCE. [Pg.94]

Chemical Abstracts Service. The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, has produced Chemical Abstracts (CA) since 1907. Since the demise of Chemisches Zentralblatt and British Chemical Abstracts CA has been the preeminent medium for documenting new pubhcations in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. CA documents chemical pubHcations of all types. It is not a patent database per se, but its patent component is larger than most databases devoted entirely to patents.
