A distillation column uses a partial condenser as shown in Figure 9.19. Assume that the reflux ratio and the overhead product composition and flowrate and the operating pressure are known and that the behavior of the liquid and vapor phases in the column is ideal (i.e. Raoult s Law holds). How can the flowrate and composition of the vapor feed to the condenser and its liquid products be estimated, given the vapor pressure data for the pure components. Set up the equations that need to be solved. [Pg.179]

Correlating ln(Pc /Pc), with vapor pressure data For isotopomer pairs with the vapor pressure and VPIE established near Tc, a thermodynamic consistency test between ln(Tc7Tc) and ln(Pc /Pc), and calculation of ln(Pc7Pc) from ln(Tc7Tc) is possible. The critical pressure of the heavier isotopomer at its critical temperature, Pc(Tc), can be calculated from the lighter, Pc,(Tc7 provided the vapor pressure of the lighter between Tc and Tc, the VPIE, and Tc and Tc are known. For Tc < Tc ... [Pg.421]

I2 (liq.). Vapor pressure data for liquid iodine were reported by Ramsay and Young,1 Stelzner and Niedersehulte,1 and Rassow.1 These data yield for the heat of vaporization, V— —12.75 + 0.0056 ( +273.1). Combination of this equation with that for the heat of sublimation gives for the heat of fusion of solid iodine, F= —3.3+0.0016 ( +273.1), or —4.0 at the melting point. See also Rideal.1... [Pg.113]

E. Example Separation of BF3 and CH2CI2. Boron trifluoride (bp —110.7°C) is readily separated from methylene chloride (bp 40.7°C) as illustrated in Fig. 5.6. Inspection of the vapor pressure data in Appendix V reveals that BF3 exerts 75 torr at — 126°C, whereas extrapolation of the vapor pressure data for CH2CI2 to this temperature (log P vs. 1/T plot) indicates a vapor pressure of less than 10 3 torr for this component. Therefore, the reaction mixture is slowly passed through a trap cooled to — 126°C (methylcyclohexane slush bath, see below), which retains the methylene chloride, and into another trap at — 196°C (liquid nitrogen), which retains the boron trifluoride. The rate of trans-... [Pg.59]

Any substance which may be obtained pure and for which accurate vapor pressure data are available may be used for vapor pressure thermometry. Stock recommended a convenient series of compounds and, in collaboration with Hen-nig and others, he obtained accurate vapor pressure data for these compounds.15 These data were obtained on a temperature scale for which 0°C = 273.1K however, more recent data on several of the compounds show it would be difficult to improve on Stock s vapor pressure tables. When high accuracy is desired, the usual precautions involved in precise manometry (Chapter 7) must be observed. [Pg.96]

When converting to the absolute temperature scale T, it is important to recognize the convention 0°C — 273.15 K. The constants A and B in Eq. (3) are determined empirically from experimental data by plotting log P versus 1 /T and taking the slope as —A and the intercept at 1/T = 0 as B. Equation (2) is found to yield a fairly accurate fit to vapor pressure data for highly volatile substances and is often perfectly adequate for moderately accurate data below the boiling point. [Pg.147]
