Allergic symptom

Many irritative chemicals may cause non-specific hyper-responsitivity of the airways and skin. The number of irritating chemicals is very large, several thousands. The symptoms caused by exposure to irritants may resemble allergic symptoms. In addition, exposure to irritating substances (such as sulfur dioxide or solvent vapors) often triggers the symptoms in individuals with allergic asthma. [Pg.311]

Because of their limited effects on allergic symptoms, decongestants often are used in combination with antihistamines.8 Many antihistamines are available in fixed-dose combinations with pseudoephedrine, which enhances the reduction in nasal congestion and allows for the patient convenience of one tablet. Optimally, therapy should be initiated with an antihistamine alone, adding the adrenergic agent only if nasal congestion does not resolve with antihistamine monotherapy. Use of separate antihistamine and pseudoephedrine also permits independent dose titration.4,11,12... [Pg.931]

Chronic inflammatory response is one of the hallmarks of allergic diseases. Over the course of pollen season, there might be even a tenfold increase in numbers of nasal epithelial submucosal mast cells. Histamine released from these cells might not only induce acute allergic symptoms but also be crucial for sustaining this response into a chronic phase, as increasing evidence suggests that it influences several immune/inftammatory and effector functions (table 2) [2]. [Pg.70]

Allergic symptoms may be local or systemic and their manifestations may also vary. Local symptoms can manifest as a late phase reaction syndrome, which develops within 30 minutes (but may be delayed to six to eight hours). Changes characteristic for cell-mediated hypersensitivity, such as an inflam-... [Pg.120]

This drag lessens the allergic response of the organism caused by histamine. Tripelennamine is used for allergic symptoms, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and for allergic and anaphylactic reactions. Synonyms of this drug are pelanin and pyribenzamine. [Pg.224]

The common side effects are nausea and vomiting. The others are allergic symptoms including drug fever, skin rash, urticaria, eosinophilia, photosensitization reactions, serum sickness like syndrome. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and exfoliative dermatitis are also common with longer acting agents. [Pg.306]

The most severe side effects, which may occur during SLIT, consist of the allergic symptoms themselves such as allergic rhinitis, asthma attacks or atopic eczema [31]. Anaphylactic reactions are not expected, because allergens do not penetrate the mucosa in an unlimited way, thus entering blood vessels, as is possible after injections. [Pg.49]

The immunological modification induced by LNIT can be briefly summarized in the two points (1) reduction of allergic symptoms and allergic phlogo-sis (decrease of local inflammatory cells) and (2) reduction of the provocative threshold with the specific nasal provocation test. [Pg.97]

In food allergy, serum IL-5 was found to be elevated in infants with anaphylaxis to cow s milk at 1 week, but became undetectable after 2 weeks on a milk-free diet (M9). It seems likely that the allergic inflammation due to cow s milk or other food allergens can induce marked eosinophilia with an associated increase in IL-5 production. Therefore, IL-5 may serve as a marker for food allergy. Other studies have also shown that IL-5 expression correlates significantly with eosinophilia and allergic symptoms of allergic rhinitis in patients with hay fever (W13). [Pg.31]
