Plasticizers and Processing Aids. Petroleum-based oils are commonly used as plasticizers. Compound viscosity is reduced, and mixing, processing, and low temperature properties are improved. Air permeabihty is increased by adding extender oils. Plasticizers are selected for their compatibihty and low temperature properties. Butyl mbber has a solubihty parameter of ca 15.3 (f /cm ) [7.5 (cal/cm ) ], similar to paraffinic and naphthenic oils. Polybutenes, paraffin waxes, and low mol wt polyethylene can also be used as plasticizers (qv). Alkyl adipates and sebacates reduce the glass-transition temperature and improve low temperature properties. Process aids, eg, mineral mbber and Stmktol 40 ms, improve filler dispersion and cured adhesion to high unsaturated mbber substrates. 

If we consider that cell adhesion under biological circumstances is mainly brought about with the aid of preadsorbed protein on the material s surface, we may explain the unique behavior of amino-containing materials against the cell-adhesion process in terms of the reduced residence-time of protein molecules at the interface. Actually, a recent study [129] revealed that the surface of polyamine-gra/t-polystyrene copolymer (SA) containing 6 wt.% polyamine portion exhibited a minimal adsorptive property against bovine plasma fibronectin (FN) and vitronectin (VN), both of which are known to mediate cell-adhesion processes. 

Indirect food additives are adhesives, components of coatings, food-packaging materials, components of paper and paperboard, polymers, processing aids, and sanitizers. 

Solid fluorocarbon elastomers are commercially available as pure gum polymers or precompounded grades with bisphenol type curing system included. Some precompounded stocks include processing aids, adhesion promoters, or other application-specific additives. The relative strengths and weaknesses of commonly used curing systems are listed in Table 5.7.

Use Hot-melt adhesives for coatings and packaging, chewing-gum base, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, ceramics, processing aids, laminants, textiles, paints, rubber and elastomers, and waterproofing. 

Solvent-based adhesives are adhesives with polymers dissolved or pasted in organic solvents. The solvents or solvent mixtures are only processing aids and have to be removed, either partly or completely, from the applied liquid adhesive layer through evaporation or penetration prior to the fixing of the adherends. The first case is necessary for solvent-impermeable materials (metals, glass, thermosetting plastics), the second case concerns porous and solvent-permeable materials (paper, cardboard, wood, leather). This process can be accelerated by heat supply. Solvents are mainly esters, ketones, if applicable, portions of different alcohols. The total solvent portion ranges between 75-85%. 

Lubricants may be added either as an additive or at the fabrication stage as a processing aid. In general lubricants prevent adhesion with metal parts. Lubricants may be solids, such as waxes, stearates, i.e. fatty acid esters, fatty acid amides, or liquids such as liquid paraffins. Lubricants may also improve the flow and thereby lower the temperature of the moulding operation. For example, a silicone additive polydimethyl siloxane may be used in LDPE and HOPE films to improve flow. Stearamides are also used. 

Processing aids cover chemicals used for specific purposes to assist processing. Some are identical to those included under additives, e.g. lubricants, antioxidants, mould release agents. The last of these may be regularly sprayed onto moulds and may occasionally lead to poor label adhesion or oil-like contaminants.
