Miscellaneous. Talc is used in gypsumboatd joint compounds as a high end filler to promote smoothness, sandabiHty, and sag resistance. It is used in automotive primers and polyester body repair compounds to promote sandabiHty. It is used in a wide variety of caulking compounds to improve theology and sag resistance. 

Spray-dried powders find application in adhesives to build solids, increase viscosity, improve tack, and decrease drying time (145). A primary use is in joint compounds with other applications in mastics and grouts, and patching compounds (146). 

Every storage tank must have a manhole in an accessible position, preferably on top. It may be circular, oval or rectangular, and not less than 460 mm (18 in) diameter if circular or 460 mm (18 in) long and 410 mm (16 in) wide if oval or rectangular. The manlid must be securely fixed by bolts, studs or setscrews, and have a liquid and vapor-tight joint. Close-woven proofed asbestos, graphited on both sides, is a suitable jointing compound for this purpose. 

Jointing compounds such as neoprene tape or fabric strip impregnated with chromate inhibitor or other inhibited caulking compounds should be applied carefully to ensure complete exclusion of water. 

There are, however, certain materials used as ingredients in the manufacture of plastics, which almost invariably give a corrosive product. Included in this category are wood, which is frequently used as a filler or as part of a composite drying oils, used in paints, adhesives, jointing compounds and linoleum and esters of volatile acids frequently retained in certain cold setting formulations, especially some paints. ... 

Do not use oil, grease or jointing compounds on any fittings for compressed gas cylinders. 

Use jointing compound or tape to cure leaks in oxygen equipment, e.g. at cylinder connections. 

The electrical connection to the steel is normally done by using a selftapping screw in a drilled hole in the steel at some distance from the reference electrode location (typically 0.5 metres away).The connection point is carefully sealed off with a moisture-free jointing compound to avoid unwanted electrochemical activity at the connection point. Such activity will disturb the potential measurement. 

In a hood, 211 g. of powdered phosphorus(V) chloride (1.01 mols) is intimately mixed with 75 g. of powdered phosphorus ) sulfide (0.338 mol) in a 500-ml. beaker. This mixture is then transferred to the lecture bottle. Use of a 150-mm. short-stemmed funnel and a stirring rod facilitates this transfer and keeps the pipe threads clean. After treatment with pipe-joint compound, the pipe plug is screwed into place. (A satisfactory pipe-joint compound can be made by grinding litharge and glycerol together.)... 

All of these materials-brick, mortars and membranes-will be fully discussed in later chapters along with (1) Castables, grouts, and polymer concretes (2) Monolithics (troweled, sprayed and gunned linings) and (3) Expansion joint compounds, plus rigid plastic fabrications such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC. These components made from a whole host of materials are effectively used in a wide variety of industrial applications requiring superior chemical and thermal resistance.
