Doxorubicin is one of the most effective agents used in the treatment of carcinomas of the breast, ovary, endometrium, bladder, and thyroid and in oat cell cancer of the lung. It is included in several combination regimens for diffuse lymphomas and Hodgkin s disease. Doxorubicin can be used as an alternative to daunorubicin in acute leukemias and is useful in Ewing s sarcoma, osteogenic sarcoma, soft-tissue sarcomas, and neuroblastoma. Some activity has been reported in non-oat cell lung cancer, multiple myeloma, and adenocarcinomas of the stomach, prostate, and testis. [Pg.646]

Ankyloblepharon (adherence of the eyelids resulting in narrowing of palpebral apertures) was reported in a 59-year-old man during fluorouracil therapy for metastatic adenocarcinoma of the stomach (74). It appeared that bilateral conjunctival ulcers, secondary to fluorouracil and ulcerative blepharitis, resulted in ankyloblepharon. Withdrawal of chemotherapy resulted in improvement and re-initiation of therapy resulted in recurrence of ocular lesions. [Pg.1410]

Carcinogenesis. Surviving victims of mustard exposure during the Iran-haq War are exhibiting carcinoma of the nasopharynx, bronchogenic carcinoma, adenocarcinoma of the stomach, as well as acute myeloblastic and lymphoblastic leukemia (Balali-Mood and Hefazi, 2006). Definitive studies of the nature and types of cancers seen in this patient population and correlations with severity of exposure have yet to be published. [Pg.306]

Cytokeratin 20 (CK20) is a type I acidic low molecular weight cytokeratin that was initially described in 1992. 1 It is found in normal tissues of the stomach, intestine, urothelium, and in Merkel cells. It is found in most adenocarcinomas of the large and small intestines, in mucinous tumors of the ovary, and in Merkel cell carcinomas, and it is frequently present in urothelial carcinoma and in adenocarcinomas of the stomach, pancreas, and bile ducts. It is a useful marker for primary mucinous tumors of the ovary and for various types of metastases that are found in the ovaries. [Pg.721]

Mitomycin is administered IV in the treatment of disseminated adenocarcinoma of the stomach or pancreas, and it has been used intravesically in superficial bladder cancer. Biotransformation pathways are saturable, and approximately 10% of an administered dose is eliminated unchanged via the kidneys. Myelosuppression is the major use-limiting side effect of this drug, which is slow to manifest but quite prolonged in duration. Severe skin necrosis can occur on extravasation, and potentially fatal pulmonary toxicities have been noted as well. Mitomycin can induce hemolytic uremia accompanied by irreversible renal dysfunction and thrombocytopenia, and the drug should not be administered to patients with serum creatinine levels greater than 1.7 mg/dL. Severe bronchospasm also has been noted in patients treated with vinca alkaloids who also are receiving (or who have previously received) mitomycin. [Pg.1806]
