Blood samples were centrifuged at 1000 x g for 20 min at 0-4°. Ionized calcium levels were immediately determined in serum and urine samples using a calcium ion-selective electrode (Ionetics, Inc., Costa Mesa, CA) urine volumes were recorded. The remaining serum and urine were aliquoted for various analyses and stored at -40°. Serum insulin was analysed by radioimmunoassay (Amersham Corp., Arlington Heights, IL). Serum levels of total calcium, phosphorus and creatinine as well as urine creatinine were determined by colorimetric procedures using an automated analyzer (Centrifichem, Baker Instruments Corp., Pleasantville, NY). Glomerular filtration rates (GFR) were calculated from serum and urine creatinine data GFR = urine creatinine/serum creatinine. 

While the platelet count is being lowered (usually during the first 2 weeks of treatment), monitor blood counts (hemoglobin, white blood cells), liver function (AST, ALT), and renal function (serum creatinine, serum urea nitrogen [BUN]). 

Repeatedly assess renal and liver functions by measurement of BUN, serum creatinine, serum bilirubin, and liver enzymes. 

After resolution of the acute phase, maintenance levels of at least 0.8 mEq/L are necessary for optimal efficacy and should be checked once every 6 to 12 months, or more often if clinically indicated. Other follow-up tests include periodic thyroid function tests, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, serum calcium (because lithium may cause hypoparathyroidism), and an EGG. Thyroid function tests and renal function should be monitored approximately every 6 to 12 months (see the section Maintenance/Prophylaxis Treatment in Chapter 10). 

We enrolled five members of the Kanazawa Medical University Soccer Team (including one member with a history of ALPE) in order to examine changes in serum creatinine, serum myoglobin, and CPK before and after a match. There were no differences in the levels of change in these three parameters regardless of the presence or absence of a history of ALPE (Fig. 66). We did not investigate creatinine clearance.
