Astemi2ole (10) has further been modified into a series of 4-phenylcyclohexylamine compounds, resulting in the synthesis of cabastine, for example. Cabastine is a highly active compound and its geometric isomers are also active, demonstrating the stereoselectivity of histamine receptors toward chiral ligands. The > S, 4 R-levo antipode of cabastine was the most active, and therefore this isomer, levocabastine (13), has been chosen for further development. Because of high potency, levocabastine has been developed for topical appHcation such as eye drops and nasal spray. 

In 1949 the World Health Organization adopted the biological activity of 1 mg of an oil solution containing 0.025 p.g of crystalline D as the analytical standard for vitamin D. This standard was discontinued in 1972. USP uses crystalline cholecalciferol as a standard (80). One international unit of vitamin D activity is that activity demonstrated by 0.025 ]1 of pure crystalline (7 -vitamin D. One gram of vitamin D3 is equivalent to 40 x 10 lU or USP units. The international chick unit (ICU) is identical to the USP unit.

Generalization tests indicated that a number of compounds were able to substitute for PCP (table 1). Ketamine and tiletamine, which are structurally similar to PCP, produced dose-dependent effects mimicking PCP. The studies summarized in this review demonstrate the broad utility of the QUINAPHOS hgand family for a variety of reactions in combination with different metals. Both monodentate and bidentate ligands derived from 1,2-dihydro-quinoline ensure high levels of enantioselectivity and/or activity, demonstrating the suitability of this chiral backbone. 

The original activity referred to is the activity of the optically active sec-butylmercuric bromide used to make the dialkyl compound. The actual result was that, under several different sets of conditions, the product had one-half of the original activity, demonstrating retention of configuration. 

Research of recent years has moved bioflavonoids from a consideration of their effects on capillaries into a more central position in human health. Certain bioflavonoids intervene at the molecular level to potentiate or inhibit enzyme action or at the physiological level to affect rheology of blood. The broad spectrum of activity demonstrated by some of these meth-oxylated flavones appears to be directed towards processes which underlie degenerative diseases, at present our greatest killers. 

Although composed of weak and overlapping spectral features, near-infrared spectra can be used to extract analytical information from complex sample matrices. Chemical sensing with in-line near-infrared spectroscopy is a general technique that can be used to quantify multiple analytes in complex matrices, often without reagents or sample pretreatment.7-9 Applications are widespread in the food sciences, agricultural industry, petroleum refining, and process analytical chemistry.10-13 These activities demonstrate that near-infrared spectroscopy can provide selective and accurate quantitative measurements both rapidly and nondestructively. 

With the introduction of quality assurance in the diagnostic laboratory 56 years ago [6], a kind of educational and benchmarking process started forcing laboratories, national and international organizations, and the IVD industry to improve the methods applied in clinical laboratories. Comparison of the measurements of enzyme activity demonstrate that the analytical performance of the methods applied 30 years ago were far beyond the biological variation and most probably insufficient for medical needs. Interlaboratory comparisons show that with the new routine methods based on recommendations of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) (Table 5) comparable results can be obtained irrespective of time and space and thus small individual variations can now be detected. Similar improvements in the analytical process in clinical laboratories can be reported generally for homogenous measurands.
