The properties of acrylic ester polymers depend largely on the type of alcohol from which the acrylic acid ester is prepared [26]. Solubility in oils and hydrocarbons increases as the length of the side chain increases. The lowest member of the series, poly(methyl acrylate), has poor low-temperature properties and is water sensitive. It is therefore restricted to such applications as textile sizes and leather finishes. Poly(ethyl acrylate) is used in fiber modifications and in coatings and poly(butyl acrylate) and poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) are used in the formulation of paints and adhesives. [Pg.424]

The results of investigations of the effect of method of hybrid dispersion synthesis (la, lb, 2 or 3 - see Section 3.2) on the properties of dispersions as well as of films and coatings made from them are presented in Tables 6.9 to 6.11 (dispersions prepared using water-soluble initiator) and in Tables 6.12 to 6.14 (dispersions prepared using redox initiating system). Water is the ideal solvent from the cost and pollution viewpoints, but it is a non-solvent for many surface coating polymers. It will ssolve a small number of homopolymers, notably those derived from acrylamide, acrylic acid, itaconic acid, vinyl methyl ether, vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl sulphonic acid, but none of these homopolymers forms flexible films of use in the coatings industry. While copolymers of acrylic or methacrylic acids with acrylate esters are generally insoluble in water, their salts are soluble when the acid content is over 5% (for hydrophilic monomers) and 12% (for hydrophobic monomers). Such polymers can be prepared in solution, or in emulsion, but not in aqueous solution. This is because the acrylate esters are insoluble in water. The acid is copolymerised in the un-ionised form because the ion is unreactive to free radicals. In emulsion polymerisation, care has to be taken to avoid homopolymerisation of the acrylic or methacrylic acid in the water phase. Suppression of homopolymerisation requires a low concentration of acid throughout the polymerisation process. This can be achieved by using a long reaction period and slow addition of monomer mixture, or by careful pH buffer selection. [Pg.84]

Vinyl toluene (VT) is combined with acrylic monomers such as butyl acrylate to produce polymers soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. These are used mainly in masonry coating applications (see below). [Pg.181]

Suspension polymerization also is used When acrylic monomers or their mixtures with other monomers are polymerized while suspended (usually in aqueous system), the polymeric product is obtained m the form of small beads, sometimes called pearls or granules. Bead polymers are the basis of the production of molding powders and denture materials. Polymers derived from acrylic or methacrylic acid furnish exchange resins of the carboxylic acid type. Solutions in organic solvents furnish lacquers, coatings and cements, while water-soluble hydrolysates are used as thickeners, adhesives, and sizes. [Pg.17]

The formation of coagulum is observed in all types of emulsion polymers (i) synthetic rubber latexes such as butadiene-styrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene, and butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine copolymers as well as polybutadiene, polychloroprene, and polyisoprene (ii) coatings latexes such as styrene-butadiene, acrylate ester, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and ethylene copolymers (iii) plastisol resins such as polyvinyl chloride (iv) specialty latexes such as polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, and other fluorinated polymers (v) inverse latexes of polyacrylamide and other water-soluble polymers prepared by inverse emulsion polymerization. There are no major latex classes produced by emulsion polymerization that are completely free of coagulum formation during or after polymerization. [Pg.201]
