General. The solution and film properties of an acrylic coatings polymer are determined by (1) the molecular weight, (2) the nature of the polymer solution, and (3) the composition of the polymer backbone. [Pg.1034]

C) It is well-known that the presence of certain types of functionality in the ester side chain imparts specific characteristic film properties to the acrylic coating (7). Some of these characteristics are summarized in Table II. By knowing the end use requirements of flexibility, adhesion, hardness, etc., the acrylic coatings polymer chemist can often tailor-make a polymer to fit the defined needs of the application. [Pg.1036]

Acrylic coating polymers n. Acrylic resins or polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate used for formulating coating. [Pg.20]

Rnssell et al. [191] (for detailed information, see Section 2.9.1) tested salicylic acid releasing nrethane-acrylate-coated polymer conpon against P. aeruginosa biofilm nsing this flow cell method. The biofilm was then stained with propidinm iodide. A control polymer conpon showed much higher fluorescence intensity dne... [Pg.61]

Acrylates are primarily used to prepare emulsion and solution polymers. The emulsion polymerization process provides high yields of polymers in a form suitable for a variety of appHcations. Acrylate polymer emulsions were first used as coatings for leather in the eady 1930s and have found wide utiHty as coatings, finishes, and binders for leather, textiles, and paper. Acrylate emulsions are used in the preparation of both interior and exterior paints, door poHshes, and adhesives. Solution polymers of acrylates, frequentiy with minor concentrations of other monomers, are employed in the preparation of industrial coatings. Polymers of acryHc acid can be used as superabsorbents in disposable diapers, as well as in formulation of superior, reduced-phosphate-level detergents. [Pg.148]

Methyl ethyl ketone may also he produced hy the catalyzed dehydrogenation of sec-hutanol over zinc oxide or brass at about 500°C. The yield from this process is approximately 95%. MEK is used mainly as a solvent in vinyl and acrylic coatings, in nitrocellulose lacquers, and in adhesives. It is a selective solvent in dewaxing lubricating oils where it dissolves the oil and leaves out the wax. MEK is also used to synthesize various compounds such as methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, a polymerization catalyst used to form acrylic and polyester polymers and methyl pentynol by reacting with acetylene ... [Pg.242]

Some polymers like PE and NR get cross-linked on exposure to radiation while others like those based on vinylidene polymers, e.g., polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyisobutylene, degrade. Certain other types of polymer stmctures (high aromatic content or thermoset) resist degradation by high-energy radiation. Coating polymers usually contain acrylic, methacryUc, or fumaric vinyl unsaturation along or attached to the backbone. [Pg.856]

Swelling sustained-release coating polymers such as Eudragit NE 30 D, i.e. poly(ethyl-acrylate-methylmethacrylate) [101,102] or Eudragit RS [90], lead to a delay in drug release which is dependent on the thickness of the coating since these films have slow rates of swelling. [Pg.166]

Polyurethane-acrylic coatings with interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were synthesized from a two-component polyurethane (PU) and an unsaturated urethane-modified acrylic copolymer. The two-component PU was prepared from hydroxyethylacrylate-butylmethacrylate copolymer with or without reacting with c-caprolactonc and cured with an aliphatic polyisocyanate. The unsaturated acrylic copolymer was made from the same hydroxy-functional acrylic copolymer modified with isocyanatoethyl methacrylate. IPNs were prepared simultaneously from the two-polymer systems at various ratios. The IPNs were characterized by their mechanical properties and glass transition temperatures. [Pg.297]

Exemplary water-repellent treatments for masonry surfaces include metal stearates, oils, waxes, acrylates (both polymers and monomers), silicones (solvent-based and emulsion), siliconates, silanes and, fluorochemicals. In contrast, to waterproofing coatings, water-repellent coatings, because they are permeable to water vapor, do not trap moisture and, therefore they can reduce spalling. In addition most water-repellent coatings do not alter the appearance of a porous masonry. [Pg.200]

Recently, hot melt PSA systems have been introduced and radiation curable PSA systems are at the commercial development stage. High solids (50%-70% by wt.) nonaqueous dispersion acrylic PSA systems have also been reported(1). Unlike the hot melt and radiation cured systems which require new capital outlay in coating head and/or curing (drying) equipment, BFG has developed PSA systems, based on Hycar 2100R reactive acrylic liquid polymers and isocyanate terminated prepolymer, which can be processed at 80% solids (by wt.) with equipment presently used in the PSA industry, namely, the reverse roll and knife-over-roll coater. [Pg.97]
