Crosslinked particles

It may also be possible to crosslink the acrylic PSA with the help of multifunctional acrylates or methacrylates [87], These monomers can simply be copolymerized with the balance of the other monomers to form a covalently crosslinked network in one step. Since the resulting polymer is no longer soluble, this typ)e of crosslinking is typically limited to bulk reactions carried out as an adhesive coating directly on the article or in emulsion polymerizations where the crosslinked particles can be dried to a PSA film. [Pg.498]

Gel present in natural rubber when the crosslinked particles are at or below the limits of microscopic vision (0.1 ptm) the gel is known as microgel. The term is also applied to similar structures in synthetic rubber. [Pg.40]

For small microgels, like crosslinked particles of a microemulsion (diameter below 102 nm), the definition of the gel point is no longer clear. For instance, a... [Pg.114]

Dimethacrylate monomers were polymerized by free radical chain reactions to yield crosslinked networks which have dental applications. These networks may resemble ones formed by stepwise polymerization reactions, in having a microstructure in which crosslinked particles are embedded in a much more lightly crosslinked matrix. Consistently, polydimethacrylates were found to have very low values of Tg by reference to changes in modulus of elasticity determined by dynamic mechanical analysis. [Pg.427]

Precrosslinked" or "intramolecularly crosslinked" particles are micronetworks [1]. They represent structures intermediate between branched and macroscopically crosslinked systems. Their overall dimensions are still comparable with those of high molecular weight linear polymers, the internal structure of micronetworks (p-gels), however, resembles a typical network [2]. Synthesis is performed either in dilute solution or in a restricted reaction volume, e.g., in the micelles of an emulsion. Particle size and particle size distribution can be controlled by reaction conditions. Functional groups can be... [Pg.673]

Precrosslinked poly(organosiloxane) particles are composed of crosslinking trifunctional and linear difunctional siloxane units (T and D units, respectively) [5]. The molar ratios of D and T units can be varied without restrictions thus, hard spheres (fillers) as well as soft, elastic silicone particles are accessible. In this study, the siloxane particles were synthesized in emulsion. The particle size was controlled by emulsifier concentration and crosslink density highly crosslinked particles were obtained with particle diameters ranging from 20-50 nm the size of elastic particles could be varied between 70 and 150 nm. The composition of precrosslinked poly(organosiloxane) particles is summarized in Scheme 1 further, organic radicals R which can be incorporated into the partieles are listed [6,7]. [Pg.674]

Novozym 435-catalyzed KRP of racemic 4-MeCL was applied by Xiao et al. to prepare chiral crosslinked particle. By letting the conversion in the KRP of 4-MeCL proceed to 50% or 91%, poly ((.S )- and poly((rac)-4-MeCL), respectively, were obtained. The R-enantiomer of 4-MeCL could be recovered from the polymerization mixture that afforded poly((S)-4-MeCL), and was subsequently polymerized with Novozym 435 to poly((R)-4-MeCL) (Scheme 11.22). GPC analysis confirmed that molecular weights of the polymers were almost identical (Mn around 3kgmoT PDI around 1.5 after precipitation) and optical rotation measurements revealed opposite signs for poly((S)- and poly((R)-4-MeCL) while... [Pg.300]

A parallel study has reported the synthesis of crosslinked polymer microspheres in supercritical carbon dioxide [54]. Heterogeneous free-radical polymerization of divinyl benzene and ethyl benzene were carried out at 65 C and 310 bar using AIBN initiator to form the crosslinked polymer. It is shown that in the absence of surfactants as stabilizers, polymerization of the mixture containing 80 % divinyl benzene + 20 % ethyl benzene leads to poly(divinylbenzene) microspheres of about 2.4 micron diameter [Figure 14]. In the presence of a carbon dioxide-soluble diblock copolymer as a stabilizer, polymerization of the mixture with the same monomer ratio proceeds as an emulsion and lead to smaller crosslinked particles (ca. 0.3 micron). Thermal analysis shows that the crosslinked polymer that is formed from these polymerizations is stable up to 400 C. [Pg.272]

The polyurethane-urea dispersions which are obtained employing these shear-force dispersant methods generally have particle sizes from 0-7 to 3 //m and, from crosslinked particles, films are formed only at temperatures exceeding 100 C. Small amounts of solvent may be added to the prepolymer to improve dispersion and remain in the dispersion, since their removal would impair stability. Best results are obtained with diamine-extended polyether-isocyanate prepolymers. The choice of suitable dispersants is of considerable importance. [Pg.283]

The "swelling ratio" of the emulsified particles was determined at frequent intervals to monitor the autoxidative reaction. In each determination, a 0.2 gram sample of emulsified solids was added to a deciliter of reagent grade acetone to swell the crosslinked particles. Density, viscosity... [Pg.311]
