Integrating acquisitions

Model development. While single-model experts rarely admit that their models are complete, toolkit experts must be able to use whatever models are available, regardless of their state of development. Thus, the toolkit approach changes the focus of research from model development to model acquisition, integration and use.

The sequence in the quantitative evaluation of a chromatogram is raw data acquisition-integration-calibration and calculation of results-generating the analysis report. 

In summary, exploration activities require the integration of different techniques and disciplines. Clear definition of survey objectives is needed. When planning and executing an exploration campaign the duration of data acquisition and interpretation has to be taken into account. 

Therefore it is reasonable to prepare already the data acquisition for a three dimensional evaluation in cone-beam-technique by means of two-dimensional detectors. The system is already prepared to integrate a second detector- system for this purpose. An array of up to four flat panel detectors is foreseen. The detector- elements are based on amorphous silicon. Because of the high photon energy and the high dose rates special attention was necessary to protect the read-out electronics. Details of the detector arrangement and the software for reconstruction, visualisation and comparison between the CT results and CAD data are part of a separate paper during this conference [2]. 

Our near future improvements include automatic defect detection and reporting, and integration of reports into Word or Excel documents. On the long nin, automatic comparison with historical data will be possible, and if acquisition cards improve, acquisition may be perfomied by the analysis tools. 

Frequency-Modulation Spectroscopy. Frequency-modulation spectroscopy (tins) is a high sensitivity null-background infrared technique for measuring absorbances down to 10 with fast acquisition speeds. Fms involves frequency-modulating a laser source at COq to produce a carrier frequency having sidebands at cJq where is an integral multiple of the modulation frequency. Dye lasers and many other single-line sources can... 

Of these, the first two place demands on the processing speed of the knowledge-based system and its integration with the environment, eg, data acquisition interfaces. The third impacts on the nature of the computational cycle and the system s abiHty to reschedule its own computations. The latter two place demands on the representation and reasoning capabiHties of the system, and are the most interesting from a knowledge-based system viewpoint. 

Like XPS, the application of AES has been very widespread, particularly in the earlier years of its existence more recently, the technique has been applied increasingly to those problem areas that need the high spatial resolution that AES can provide and XPS, currently, cannot. Because data acquisition in AES is faster than in XPS, it is also employed widely in routine quality control by surface analysis of random samples from production lines of for example, integrated circuits. In the semiconductor industry, in particular, SIMS is a competing method. Note that AES and XPS on the one hand and SIMS/SNMS on the other, both in depth-profiling mode, are complementary, the former gaining signal from the sputter-modified surface and the latter from the flux of sputtered particles. 

Instruments based on the contact principle can further be divided into two classes mechanical thermometers and electrical thermometers. Mechanical thermometers are based on the thermal expansion of a gas, a liquid, or a solid material. They are simple, robust, and do not normally require power to operate. Electrical resistance thermometers utilize the connection between the electrical resistance and the sensor temperature. Thermocouples are based on the phenomenon, where a temperature-dependent voltage is created in a circuit of two different metals. Semiconductor thermometers have a diode or transistor probe, or a more advanced integrated circuit, where the voltage of the semiconductor junctions is temperature dependent. All electrical meters are easy to incorporate with modern data acquisition systems. A summary of contact thermometer properties is shown in Table 12.3.

Computer Techniques McLafferty (Ref 63) has pointed out that the usefulness of elemental composition information increases exponentially with increasing mass, since the number of elemental combinations with the same integral mass becomes larger. There are compilations of exact masses and elemental compositions available (Refs 12a, 13 18a). Spectral interpretation will be simplified in important ways if elemental compositions of all but, the smallest peaks are determined. Deriving the elemental compositions of several peaks in a spectrum is extremely laborious and time-consuming. However, with the availability of digital computers such tasks are readily performed. A modern data acquisition and reduction system with a dedicated online computer can determine peak centroids and areas for all peaks, locate reference peaks, interpolate between them to determine the exact masses of the unknown peaks, and find within minutes elemental compositions of all ions in a spectrum (Refs 28b 28c)...

The extent to which the current trend toward mergers and acquisitions continues in life sciences, and also the extent to which larger pharmaceutical companies outsource research and development to smaller companies. It may become necessary for rapid integration of systems between companies that had previously had no relationship at all, and for the secure integration of particular systems between collaborating companies.
