Despite the introduction of synthetic elastomers, ceramics and other abrasion resisting metals such as manganese, natural rubber holds a dominant position in this field of application and is the primary choice for abrasion resistance. Synthetic rubbers (particularly styrene-butadiene rubber which is dominant in the tyre industry sector) are used in dry abrasion application such as general purpose abrasion resistant sheets and conveyor belt covers, since the rubber can be reinforced with fine particles of carbon blacks to achieve dry abrasion resistance close to that of natural rubber. Porcelain enamels meet a variety of performance characteristics required for different appHcations. The common characteristics of all enamels include good adherence to the substrate and good thermal expansion fit to the metal. Erosion. The abrasive is likely to be gas borne (as in catalytic cracking units), liquid borne (as in abrasive slurries), or gravity pulled (as in catalyst transfer lines). Because of the association of velocity and kinetic energy, the severity of erosion may increase as some power (usually up to the 3d) of the velocity. The angle of impingement also influences severity. At supersonic speeds, even water droplets can be seriously erosive. There is some evidence that the response of resisting metals is influenced by whether they are ductile or brittle. A wide range of polyurethane-type products has become available in recent years for coating applications. These include simple solutions of linear polyurethanes, two-pot alkyd-isocyanate and polyether-isocyanate systems and a variety of prepolymer and adduct systems. The coatings can vary considerably in hardness and flexibility and find use mainly because of their toughness, abrasion resistance and flexibility. Uses include metal finishes in chemical plant, wood finishes for boats and sports equipment, finishes for rubber goods and rain-erosion-resistant coatings for aircraft. One type of coating is potentially competitive with PVC leathercloth. Both alkyd-di-isocyanate and adduct-diisocyanate compositions may be coated on to fabrics from solutions of controlled viscosity and solids content. Such coated fabrics are soft, flexible and, unlike PVC leathercloth, free from plasticisers. [Pg.805]

The films are generally dark in colour and often show a fine network of cracks due to differential expansion of oxide and metal on warming to ambient temperature. They are generally left unsealed, since sealing markedly reduces abrasion resistance, but may be impregnated with silicone oils to improve the frictional properties. Applications include movable instrument parts, pump bodies and plungers, and textile bobbins. [Pg.689]

Thermoplastics which are used for corrosion protection can be applied in coatings as thin as 0.025 mm by solution techniques and in excess of 5 mm by extrusion or plastisol dipping. They are used where environmental resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, sound deadening or cushioning are required. They are used in those market areas that necessitate metallic mechanical strength plus thermoplastic corrosion resistance. [Pg.745]

Nylon 11 Nylon 11 is a hard abrasion-resistant, scuff-resistant coating. When correctly formulated and applied, it can be used for exterior application. It has good resistance to solvents and to a range of alkalis and salt solutions up to 80°C. If water quenched, the coating has excellent impact strength. However, Nylon 11 is crystalline and pull-back from sharp edges can be a problem. It is therefore essential that metal work is well radiused. [Pg.753]
