Ability to Communicate

Throughout this book, communications have been mentioned several times. The ability for an FLS to communicate will probably make a huge difference in his or her success. The novice FLS will quickly develop his or her communication skills. As the career of the novice FLS advances, communication skills grow. Ideally, this skill continues to grow throughout everyone s career and lifetime. Although this development of communications skills will have a positive effect on all of the activities that the FLS becomes involved in, safety culture will also become more developed. 

When I began my career as an FLS, one of my mentors stressed the tremendous importance of my attitude. The main point was that I needed 

Balance is an important theme that has been used throughout this book. Remember that extremism in any direction should be avoided. Management needs to stay focused and positive. Team members will probably need to be reminded to stay focused and positive. Although positivity is important, an admission that all is not well is sometimes in order. Being too positive can cause a loss of the respect of fellow team members. On the other hand, let s not be too negative. That same loss of respect can occur and be even more difficult to return to an even keel. 

A variety of simple methods can be used to enhance one s communication skills. Try to look at yourself from the vantage point of the way others see you. You may believe that you already practice this method. Just to make sure, have someone videotape you in the act of communicating. Have the person with the camera take some closeups and some shots and angles from varied distances. Play close attention to how you look on this videotape. Besides how you look, pay attention to how you sound. After viewing this video, ask yourself some questions Is the person on the video portraying the person that you believe you are K not, how can the presentation be adjusted so that you are communicating more effectively A self-assessment is in order, and a self-improvement plan 

As one practices communication, a personal style will emerge. Using videos to see how you appear to others around you is a valuable communication improvement tool. But let s say that you do not wish to use a video or are too shy or embarrassed to see and hear yourself on tape. If this is the case, another method can be effective. I locate a mirror, the largest mirror possible, and I practice my communication to myself while observing myself in the mirror. This may seem a bit strange at first, but it helps

One of the most important reasons for man s progress in understanding and controlling his environment is his ability to communicate knowledge to the next generation. It isn t necessary for each twentieth century scientist to invent the atomic description of matter. I do not go out of my way to boldly split infinitives, nor do I actively seek prepositions to end sentences with. Yet by these constructions alone, I may be viewed by some as aiding the decline in students ability to communicate. 

In this lofty position, he has for nearly fifty years followed and often guided the research efforts of so many workers that his label, "everything to everybody" takes on real meaning. With his breadth of contacts and genuine interest in people and his ability to communicate with interested audiences of almost any level of knowledge, he has been and remains one of the most liked, visible, important leaders in science.

He or she must also have the planning skills to realise that potential, and an ability to communicate at all levels, both inside and outside the company. Drug adverse events will always remain part of modern medicine and the potential for another thalidomide disaster cannot be totally dismissed. The prevention of a future disaster lies, not in simply increasing the number of regulatory hurdles but in the ability to communicate and control unexpected events and where necessary make rapid withdrawal from the market. 

Ability to Communicate. The mental status exam is critical to the determination of a patient s capacity to consent, and the ability to communicate is an absolute prerequisite (see the section Diagnostic Assessment in Chapter 1). Psychomotor impairments such as mutism or catatonia (withdrawn type) would severely affect an individual s fundamental ability to communicate any appreciation of the issues involved and their ramifications. Although an individual may actually be well oriented and may intellectually appreciate and even later remember events that occurred and the issues involved, that person is not capable of consenting if unable to demonstrate these faculties. 

Adequate compliance with treatment is a major issue affecting the potential for a successful outcome. As noted in this section, several factors may contribute to a patient s willingness to persist with treatment as prescribed. Perhaps foremost is the clinicians ability to communicate their approach in an empathic and understandable manner. 

As a result of this experience, I have improved my ability to communicate with my staff, get their attention and convince them of my determination. Although I feel I have achieved a lot, I still have a long way to go. I have not yet won over all of them. 

Because e-mail, faxes, and other written correspondence have become the primary methods of communication in today s business world, many employers rely on the cover letter to evaluate a candidate s ability to communicate in writing. Virtually all employers put great value on an applicant with strong written and oral communication skills. After all, a resume is typically a series of bulleted lists and short sentences, but a cover letter represents an actual writing sample. 

Although you may be totally qualified for the job for which you re about to apply, unless you have the ability to communicate your knowledge, skills, and experience in writing, your chances of being overlooked by a potential employer are high. 

Trivial names convey little or no structural information. However they are still widely used in the chemical literature, and it seems unlikely that they will ever be eliminated completely from it. Many such names are now very well established (indeed present-day systematic nomenclature is based to a considerable extent on a residue of trivial names), and they are usually brief and well suited to the spoken language. However, the extensive use of trivial nomenclature in the literature places a substantial burden on the memory of the reader, thus impairing an author s ability to communicate, and is not to be encouraged. The introduction of a new trivial name is rarely justified nowadays, and in writing about chemistry it is best to employ only the relatively small number of trivial names generally accepted at the international level. 

TEMPERATURE. The thermal state of a body, considered, with reference to its ability to communicate heat to other bodies (J. C. Maxwell). There is a distinction between temperature and heat, as is evidenced by Helmholtz s definition of heat, [energy that is transferred from one body to another by a thermal process), whereby a thermal process is meant radiation, conduction, and/or convection. 

Communication is the lifeblood of any relationship. Relationships prosper almost entirely through your ability to communicate. No matter how good your other human-relations skills may be, without good communication skills, your life will be lacking. 

Michael Schrage Part of the problem goes back to Ph.D. chemists lack of ability to communicate with people in their subdiscipline. This is problematic, particularly since there is a trend toward funding collaborative and multidisciplinary projects.
