Communicating with people

Michael Schrage Part of the problem goes back to Ph.D. chemists lack of ability to communicate with people in their subdiscipline. This is problematic, particularly since there is a trend toward funding collaborative and multidisciplinary projects.

There is the problem of communicating with people in other organizations. In this case, the problems are similar to those described except that they are more numerous and more difficult to handle efficiently. There are more organizations to send samples to and often each organization has its own peculiar nomenclature practices. 

Men found themselves possessed of the means of communicating with people all over the world. In a word, we have now a tribunal, independent of all human coercion, which favours reason and justice, a tribunal whose scrutiny it is difficult to elude, and whose verdict it is impossible to evade. 

Before radios were installed in airplanes, inventors tried to communicate with people on the ground by dropping notes tied to rocks and by smoke signals. 

Computer science is the study of real and imagined computers, their hardware and software components, and their theoretical basis and application. Almost every aspect of modern life involves computers in some way. Computers allow people to communicate with people almost anywhere in the world. They control machines, from industrial assembly equipment to children s toys. Computers control worldwide stock market transactions and analyze and regulate those markets. They allow physicians to treat patients even when the physicians and patients cannot meet in the same location. Researchers endeavor to make the computers of science fiction everyday realities. 

Dutyholders should review their arrangements to communicate with people and establishments likely to be affected by a major accident to ensure that this information takes account of any additional major accident scenarios resulting from, for example, a large flammable vapour cloud. 

Something happens when doctors move into the senior ranks and particularly when they become consultants and sometimes a new arrogance can get in the way of communication with people they previously had good working relations with. So, when you reach the lofty heights of consultant, please don t change. 

Engineering educators are doing a poor job of describing to students a true picture of what engineering is really like. More training is needed in how to communicate with people and to make their concerns and desires an essential part of the engineering design process.
