ASTM abbreviation

This analysis, abbreviated as FIA for Fluorescent Indicator Adsorption, is standardized as ASTM D 1319 and AFNOR M 07-024. It is limited to fractions whose final boiling points are lower than 315°C, i.e., applicable to gasolines and kerosenes. We mention it here because it is still the generally accepted method for the determination of olefins.

Air Permeability. Air permeabiUty is an important parameter for certain fabric end uses, eg, parachute fabrics, boat sails, warm clothing, rainwear, and industrial air filters. Air permeabiUty of a fabric is related to its cover, or opacity. Both of these properties are related to the amount of space between yams (or fibers in the case of nonwovens). The most common method for specifying air permeabiUty of a fabric involves measuring the air flow per unit area at a constant pressure differential between the two surfaces of the fabric. This method, suitable for measuring permeabiUty of woven, knitted, and nonwoven fabrics, is described in ASTM D737. Units for air permeabiUty measured by this method are generally abbreviated as CFM, or cubic feet per square foot per minute. 

The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of the materials designated synthetic elastomers and the elastomeric or mbbery state. Subsequent entries describe the individual classes of elastomers in detail. Table 1 provides a fundamental description of the principal classes of synthetic elastomers. Table 2 gives the widely accepted ASTM abbreviations for synthetic mbbers.

In addition to the nomenclature based on ISO and ASTM recommendations several other abbreviations are widely used. Those most likely to be encountered are shown in Table 4.

Pressure-sensitive adhesives are used in a great variety of applications, most commonly for adhesive tapes. In that case, they have to be tested by static shear test or dynamic shear test The difference between these two methods is that in static shear test a standard force is being applied to the test specimen and the adhesive failure is reported as the time it takes for failure to occur. The dynamic shear test involves a force being applied to the PSA tape at a specific rate of speed (typically 0.25 mm or 0.1 in. per minute). The value reported is as the peak force per unit area (Ib/in, also abbreviated as psi, and in SI units MPa) required to cause adhesive failure. In ASTM D 1238-04c, a term called the flow rate ratio (FRR) for polyethylene is defined as flow rate at Condition 190/10 divided by flow rate at Condition 190/2.16, abbreviated Like MIR, the flow rate ratio is dimensionless... 

Chapter 10 discussed test methods of interest in cellular plastics and related materials from a general point of view and listed industry, government, British and International (ISO) standards in a number of relevant subject areas. This chapter will list published specifications (139) and test methods (116) used in the United States, in addition to British Standards (28) and ISO International Standards (40). United States industry standards inlcude ASTM Test Methods (116), ASTM Practices, Guides, Definitions, Terminologies and Abbreviations (24), ASTM Specifications (23), SAE-AMS Specifications (25), and Underwriters Laboratories Standards (1). U.S. Government standards covered include Military Specifications (67), Military Standards (S), Federal Standards (2), Military Handbooks (6), and Federal Specifications (24). Most of these standards are undergoing frequent revision and unused standards are constantly being withdrawn. A total of 361 standards are covered.

ASTM - Abbreviation for the American Society for Testing and Materiais, which is responsible for the issue of many standard methods used in the energy industry.

The ISA Standards and Practices Department is aware of the growing need for attention to the metric system of units in general, and the International System of Units (SI) in particular, in the preparation of instrumentation standards. Several methods are used to determine the color of plasticizers. The ASTM method of plasticizers testing includes an abbreviated procedure veiy similar to the plahnum-cobalt scale method described in detail in a separate standard. Color of transparent hquids is also measmed by Gardener color scale. Saybolt chromometer originaUy designed for petrolemn products is also used, especially in the case of mineral oils. ...

Some high-polymers have lengthy chemical names. They are usually abbreviated, such as PVC for poly(vinyl chloride), PMMA for poly(methyl methacrylate). Sometimes the names of plasticizers are also abbreviated, such as DOP for dioctyl phthalate. These symbols and their annotations are laid down in several standards such as in the American standard ASTM D 1600-83 and in the international standard ISO 1043. The most important symbols are collected in Tables 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 on the basis of ISO 1043 — 1987.
