Recent studies by Aaron Reisfield (Reisfield 1993) demonstrate that Salvia divinorum is not completely self-sterile, as had been assumed the plant can produce viable seeds, though very infrequently. Nor did Reisfield find any significant difference in the production of viable seeds from flowers pollinated from the same clone and those pollinated by plants collected from different localities. It is of course possible that there is little genetic difference between any specimens of S. divinorum, even those that today grow in widely separated areas in Oaxaca. 

Aaron s group has studied various hydroxy derivatives of both indolizidines and pyrrolizidines and assigned conformations, mainly on the basis of infrared data. For all BPHT derivatives studied by Aaron and co-workers [18-23], a linear relationship was established when plotting 1/(F-F0) vs 1/[CD]0 according to Eq. 3, with correlation coefficient values larger than 0.99, which indicates that the inclusion complex stoichiometry is 1 1. In contrast, in all cases a downward concave curvature was observed when the data were fitted to the equation corresponding to a 2 1 complex, which means that in the conditions of these studies, no 2 1 host-guest complex was formed. However, the occurrence of the sequential, equilibrated formation of 1 1 plus 2 1 complexes cannot be excluded since a linear plot should also be obtained.

Arthur S. Edison obtained a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Utah, where he studied monoterpenes isolated from southern Utah sagebrush by NMR. He completed his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he developed and applied NMR methods for peptide and protein structural studies under the supervision of John Markley and Frank Weinhold. In 1993, Dr. Edison joined the laboratory of Anthony O. W. Stretton at the University of Wisconsin as a Jane Coffin Childs postdoctoral fellow where he investigated the role of neuropeptides in the nervous system of the parasitic nematode Ascaris suum. He joined the faculty at the University of Florida and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in 1996 and is currently the Director of Chemistry Biology at the NHMFL. Dr. Edison s current research is in technology development for high-sensitivity NMR and natural product discovery in nematodes and other invertebrates. Dr. Edison is the recipient of the 1997 American Heart Association Robert J. Boucek Award, a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 1999, and, with his postdoctoral scientist Aaron Dossey, the Beal award for the best publication of the year in the Journal of Natural Products in 2007.

Aaron et al. have studied the intramolecular hydrogen bonding in hy-droxypyrrolizidines.89 They found that with 1-hydroxypyrrolizidines, IR spectra did not positively indicate any hydrogen bonding. On the other hand, with 2-hydroxypyrrolizidines, the cis-epimer (128) is readily isomerized (cyclohexanone, CSH j OK/CsH j,OH) to the more stable trans-epimer (129), which has a relatively weak intramolecular hydrogen bond, displaying a frequency shift of 35 cm"1 [Eq. (34)]. 

Phoebus Aaron Theodor Levene (1869-1940) was bom in Russia. When he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1891, his Russian name Fishel was changed to Phoebus. Because his medical school education had been intermpted, he returned to Russia to complete his studies. When he returned to the United States, he took chemistry courses at Columbia University. Deciding to forgo medicine for a career in chemistry, he went to Germany to study under Emil Fischer. He was a professor of chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute (now Rockefeller University).
