In 1965, Jacques Monod, Jeffries Wyman, and Jean-Pierre Changeux proposed a theoretical model of allosteric transitions based on the observation that allosteric proteins are oligomers. They suggested that allosteric proteins can exist in (at least) two conformational states, designated R, signifying relaxed, and T, or taut, and that, in each protein molecule, all of the subunits have the same conformation (either R or T). That is, molecular symmetry is conserved. Molecules of mixed conformation (having subunits of both R and T states) are not allowed by this model. [Pg.469]

Andre-Marie Ampere was born m Lyons, France, the son of a wealthy merchant. Ampere s education was determined by his father, Jean-Jacques, who followed Jean Jacques Rousseau s theories of education. Ampere was left to educate himself, as his inclinations dictated, among the books of his father s extensive library. At an early age Ampere discovered a talent for mathematics, working out the early books of Euclid by himself. On finding that some of the books he wished to consult in the librai y in Lyons were in Latin, he taught himself the language. Ampere s mother was a devout Catholic, who ensured he was thoroughly instructed in the faith. [Pg.69]

In 1958, Peck joined the staff of the enzymology group of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and continued there to work on sulfur metabolism of chemolithoautotrophic bacteria. In 1965, he was called to Athens. Before moving there, he spent a year in the laboratory of Jacques Senez and Jean LeGall. And then he explored the research niche of hydrogenase and sulfur metabolism, which is a gold mine still today, in various directions. [Pg.18]
