Measurement Method Selection. A measurement method should meet sampling strategy requirements to the degree that the data can be used for decision making. This does not mean that it must be the optimum method with respect to all requirements. The range of methods available is limited and it is often necessary to select a method deficient in one or more attributes but which can yield data from which conclusions can be drawn with the desired degree of confidence. This second group of tests is designed to measure the mechanical response of a substance to applied vibrational loads or strains. Both temperature and frequency can be varied, and thus contribute to the information that these tests can provide. There are a number of such tests, of which the major ones are probably the torsion pendulum and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The underlying principles of these dynamic tests have been covered earlier. Such tests are used as relatively rapid methods of characterisation and evaluation of viscoelastic polymers, including the measurement of T, the study of the curing characteristics of thermosets, and the study of polymer blends and their compatibility. They can be used in essentially non-destructive modes and, unlike the majority of measurements made in non-dynamic tests, they yield data on continuous properties of polymeric materials, rather than discontinuous ones, as are any of the types of strength which are measured routinely. [Pg.116]

The authors work demonstrated that even samples as small as 2.5 mg could be studied yielding data with s/n > 5 1. They further demonstrated for samples with aromatic rings that 60 Hz optimization of the experiment was beneficial and that correlations to aliphatic carbons with smaller LJcc couplings did not experience a serious adverse impact due to the larger optimization but the reverse was not true. The yields of non-conventional crops such as Miscanthus sinensis, poplar and willow are little known. With the exception of willows in Sweden, these new energy crop species are mostly cultivated on small plots and are often at the research stage. Consequently, these yield data have to be examined critically. The published yields of M. sinensis, for instance, range between 8 and 22 t )M ha 1 year-1 and were mainly measured under special conditions (Friihwirth et al. 2006 Scholz et al. 2007 Stolzenburg 2008).
