It has been reported that block copolymers with appropriately chosen partners and mixing ratios yield materials suitable for use in substrate disks for optical data storage. An example is polyarjiate—polystyrene block copolymer with a PS content between 40 and 60% (225). [Pg.163]

Physical characterization of polymers is a common activity that research and development technologists at the Dow Chemical Company perform. A material property evaluation that is critical for most polymer systems is a tensile test. Many instruments such as an Instron test frame can perform a tensile test and, by using specialized software, can acquire and process data. Use of an extensometer eliminates calibration errors and allows the console to display strain and deformation in engineering units. Some common results from a tensile test are modulus, percent elongation, stress at break, and strain at yield. These data are then used to better understand the capabilities of the polymer system and in what end-use applications it may be used. [Pg.453]

Dye tests, in order to yield useful data, must be closely controlled. Most commercially available dyes are greatly diluted with water for field use. Such solutions have properties (viscosity and density) essentially the same as those of water. Hydraulic data obtained with these dye solutions are directly applicable only to grouts with similarly low viscosity and density. To use dye test data directly with silicate or resin grouts, dye solutions must have their viscosity artificially increased (with a nonlubricating material) to match the higher viscosities of these grouts. [Pg.313]

It has been known for a long time that gas is formed during irradiation of PMMA. When the internal pressure of the gas formed in the reaction is sufficient to overcome the viscosity of the irradiated polymer, bubbling occurs. By suitable control of the irradiation dose and subsequent heating of the polymer, this bubbling effect can transform PMMA into a foamed material. Data on the volatile products formed at room temperature has been given by many workers [392—396]. The results are shown in Table 29. The yields seem to depend on the purity of the polymer sample. The mesostructure of the SBA-15 prepared at 80 °C was heavily disturbed after the application of the DP method, as observed using X-ray diffraction and Na adsorption-desorption measurements (data not shown). Here we only report characterization results related to the SBA-15 synthesized at 100 °C, as a lower synthesis temperature yield materials with poor hydrothermal stability [10]. Also for this material is there a significant impact on the SBA-15 textural properties by the impregnation methods. This is evident from Na adsorption-desorption measurements and X-ray diffraction as shown in Fig. 1. Physico-chemical properties derived from Na adsorption-desorption and XRD are listed in Table 1. Specifically upon inclusion of R, the surface area of SBA-15 is reduced by 20% and 70% for the Pt/SBA-15,WI and Pt/SBA-15,DP samples, respectively. However, as can be seen from the XRD data, inclusion of R by either method does not interfere with the structural ordering of the mesoporous material, as there are no significant alterations of the difftaction lineshape of the functionalized materials as compared to the parent SBA-15. Clearly, the structure of the parent SBA-15 is less affected by the WI method as compared to the influence of the DP method. [Pg.515]
