Civil society

By considering the opinions of the civil society and tackling the questions concerning chemical production it raises, the governments can achieve a relevant positive result the merging of the consensus of the academic world and industry with that of youth and public opinion, which are increasingly focusing their attention on the environment and human health protection. [Pg.329]

Combating counterfeit medicines requires the collaboration, at national, regional and international level, among several institutions and several groups representing the civil society. Each has a role to play, but it is necessary that collaboration be based on free circulation of information and frank discussion of problems. [Pg.94]

In order to sensitize decision-makers it is necessary to develop initiatives that involve all stakeholders of the public sector and the civil society through organizations representing health professionals, patients, manufacturers, distributors, as well as communication professionals and the media. [Pg.94]

Other actors of the public sector and the civil society can contribute to combating counterfeit medicines. NGOs remain(ed) critical of the list, however, because it represents a step back from the international consensus achieved with the WTO Decision. In the negotiations leading up to the Decision, several developed countries proposed to limit its scope to addressing specific diseases or just applying to specific pharmaceutical products. These efforts were roundly condemned by civil society activists as unethical and unsound health policy, and firmly rejected by developing countries. Ultimately, all WTO members agreed that there would be no such limitations. [Pg.233]

The legislation represents a victory of sorts for civil society advocates, without whom the law would not have existed at all and whose efforts led to important improvements to the draft Bill. But taken in its entirety, the Bill does not fully reflect the "flexibilities" allowed under TRIPS and the WTO Decision. A parliamentary review of the law is to occur in 2007, two years after its proclamation into force that review may provide an occasion for further amendments. [Pg.236]

Activists in the South are even more intensely engaged in similar campaigns, often with a broader base including labor, religious leaders, and organized civil society. [Pg.244]

Seeking a credit for a purported economic benefit from early death is akin to robbing the graves of Mississippi smokers who died from tobacco-related illness. No court of law or equity should entertain such a defense or counterclaim. It is offensive to human decency, an affront to justice, uncharacteristic of civilized society, and unquestionably contrary to public policy. [Pg.373]

The LESTARI study was focused on governmental institutions while that of the author covered public interest and labour organisations (PILO) or civil society organisations (CSO). These studies served as references to this paper. [Pg.49]

A discussion of institutional mechanisms cannot be separated from the discussion of their agenda since form must follow the substance, i.e. the substance must shape the form of the institution. Hence, this paper will first provide a bird s eye view of existing national policy frameworks and systems to situate the succeeding discussion on institutional mechanisms. It will then describe some relevant existing institutional mechanisms in government, business and civil society. Finally, it will identify and focus on key roadblocks as inputs to the discussions of the Round Table. Some roadblocks apply to overall development so the paper will attempt to focus or link them to issues pertaining to chemicals and hazardous substances. [Pg.49]
