I distinguish between theoretical and practical conclusions because theoretically we are interested in the degree of genetic influence on a latent trait or theoretical construct. Practically we may be interested in the heritability of a specific measure (e.g., IQ as measures by the Wechler Adult Intelligence Scale). An excellent discussion of measurement eror in psychological research can be found in Schmidt and Hunter (1996). [Pg.124]

Psychological research among DES daughters has shown how traumatic it can be for a woman to learn of her prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol, and the extent to which this creates persistent uncertainty about her health the failure of a physician to provide reliable information and continuing support can severely undermine her faith in health care (34). [Pg.169]

Gurdjieff sees the rapid, unnoticed transitions between identity states, and their relative isolation from one another, as the major cause of the psychopathology of everyday life. I agree with him, and believe this topic deserves intensive psychological research. [Pg.162]

Thus, in the mid-1970s, the Stanford group devised the MSLT and tested its usefulness, first in a study of sleep deprivation of the prototypical experimental psychology research subject, the normal college student. The timing of the MSLT was based on several considerations including ... [Pg.13]

The sequencing and ordering of the component parts of attitude has received considerable attention in psychological research (Bagozzi et ah, 2002). Under some circumstances it appears that strong affective responses precede cognitive elements, while on other occasions emotional reactions may become associated with or tied to certain beliefs. There is a detailed literature but as yet no definitive answer to the question of precedence in... [Pg.98]

The prior discussion has focused on the way that maps are used. In closing, I would like to extend the discussion further to propose ways that maps could be used, first in educational settings, and second in psychological research. [Pg.74]

Finally, and perhaps most importantly in the context of the present volume, I close with a parallel plea to expand the role of maps in psychological research. As discussed elsewhere (Liben Downs, 1989), there is a tendency for psychologists to employ simplistic maps of impoverished, small places. Furthermore, tasks typically test only location and route understanding, and often allow solutions on the basis of understanding representational correspondences alone. [Pg.75]

In this context it is interesting to note that one of the most commonly kinds of maps used in psychological research—the room plan—is not even considered to be a map by the majority of people. We (Downs, Liben Daggs, 1988) showed children and adults a collection of place images and asked Is this a map with response alternatives of Yes, No, or . Whereas a world political map elicited yes responses from 93%, 90%, 99%, and 100% of kindergartners, first-graders, second-graders, and adults, respectively, a room plan was accepted as a map by only 12%, 17%, 30%, and 33% of these same samples. And it was not simply that respondents used the response. Instead, the plan map was actively rejected (i.e., responded to with No ) by 63%, 68%, 49%, and 58% of those samples. [Pg.76]

Sandoz, which had ten years earlier initiated experimental studies of LSD, also began to offer synthetic psilocybin to medical and psychological researchers. Thus it came about that psilocybin, the active ingredient of the Mexican hallucinogenic mushroom, was manufactured in tablet form by the Sandoz Company, which had a branch in New Jersey. They offered to supply the Harvard University professor with as much of the drug as he wanted, free of charge, for research purposes. [Pg.30]

In their different ways, David Houle, Randy Nesse, Andrew Pomiankowski and Geoffrey Miller each demonstrated the strength and value of evolutionary psychology research strategies. Sometimes, popularizers of evolutionary approaches are open to the criticism that they are simply telling just so ... [Pg.284]
