Wireless wide area network

The development of the microcomputer led to the need to connect these devices to themselves and the wide area networks. In 1980, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802 standard was announced. It has provided most of the connectivity to networks since that time, although many wireless computing devices can connect with Bluetooth. [Pg.419]

Marconi had a dream of a world connected by wireless devices, and as of 2011 that dream is coming true. The IEEE 802 wireless connectivity standards as of 2009 include a personal area network (Bluetooth) that will connect all the devices in a house, car, or office. It has an expanded wireless LAN standard that will support high-speed wireless access of home and office computers into an access point. Both the wireless home network and the wireless LAN can be tied into a high-speed wireless regional network, replacing the current fiber-optic networks. There will be several high-speed cell phone networks that can also tie into the regional wireless system, and when this is added to the current satellite-based wide area networks, the result could be the fully connected wireless world Marconi envisioned. [Pg.1980]

The principle of a factory-wide network of production machines, however, allows a number of other applications. It is, for example, possible to access the status of a production plant anywhere in the world via the Internet - an aspect that should not be underestimated in the course of globalization. In addition, information about each production order, such as the causes of machine standstill, can be entered and recorded by the employees in production using so-called handheld personal digital assistants (PDA) via wireless local area networks (LAN). This information is finally collected and documented on the central server through the network. [Pg.661]

The mobility of wireless networks has been widely investigated. However, mostofthese papers focus more on random rather than controlled mobility (Jardosh, 2003). Controlled mobility is now a research area of mobile ad hoc networks (Bracka, et al., 2005). In the following research, the network commimication has been addressed from different perspectives, without following any of these characteristics of mobility would be expected to have in our proposed scenarios. [Pg.280]
