America Online

I m not the only author to realize the immense challenge in publishing fiction. For example, John Scalzi (Scalzi.com) has written extensively on the difficulty of publishing science fiction. First let me tell you a little bit about John. He is a published nonfiction book author. He has written for the Chicago Sun-Times, the Washington Post, the San Diego Tribune and the San Francisco Examiner. He s even been on Oprah. John has been an editor, most notably for a humor area on America Online. He even has an agent—for his nonfiction. 

If you don t yet have an e-mail address, consider joining one of the popular online services, such as America Online (www.aol.com), or signing up with a local Internet service provider. Many companies, such as Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), Hotmail (www.hotmail.com), and Juno (www.juno.com), offer free personal and private e-mail accounts that can be accessed from any computer connected to the Internet. 

Members of online services, such as America Online, can receive free website hosting for personal webpages. This is a cheaper alternative. 

The key to the rapid development of the Internet was the evolution and expansion of networks - collections of computers which can communicate with each other. They operate at various scales such as local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) and these can be connected to the Internet, which is a complex network of networks (Fig. 45.1). The Internet is loosely organized no one group runs it or owns it. Instead, many private organizations, universities and government departments pay for and run discrete parts of it. Private organizations include commercial online service providers such as America Online and CompuServe .

Using online satellite maps of air pollution, I went looking for the cleanest places on Earth for a new place to live. It would have to be New Zealand, South America, South Africa or Thailand. Kamm el al. (2001) analysed intact steryl esters in the presence of silylated sterols by online transfer from HPLC to a 15 m low-polarity high temperature GC column. Steryl esters were quantified against a cholesteryl laurate internal standard and identified by offline thin layer chromatography-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. When esters of sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol with the major cocoa butter acids were measured in cocoa butters from South America, Asia and Africa, no differences were apparent between cocoa butters of different geographical origin, or between deodorized and non-deodorized butters. 

There has been a rapid proliferation of commercial search interfaces, such as DataStar and STN International. STN may deserve special mention since it is a science information service operated by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in North America, Fachinformationszentrum-Karlsruhe (FIZ-K) in Europe, and Japan Association for International Chemical Information (JAICI) in Japan. It is available as online subscriber access to 220 databases (STN Express) and as web access (STN on the Web for experienced searchers and STN Easy for infrequent searchers).
