WHAT THEY ARE

The ordinary type of relay is an electromagnet that operates a switch. Many kinds of switch can be used, including the SPDT (see Index to find explanation in an earlier chapter), which is shown in Fig. 12.1. In this course, the inexpensive relay that is recommended is a DPDT, but its full capabilities will not be exploited, and it will just be operated in the single pole mode. [Pg.129]

In the circuit of Fig. 12.1, the 15 ma at 10 volts in the coil could be used to control as much as 15 amperes at 100 volts in the contacts, a power increase of 10,000 times. The relay itself includes the parts within the dashed-line rectangle. Small open circles on that line are the terminals of the relay. Electronic technicians and engineers (people working with small amounts of electricity in fairly complex circuits) ordinarily use the symbols shown in the top half of the [Pg.129]

Electricians sometimes use the other symbols shown in Fig. 12.2. Also, these are fairly common in the electronics diagrams used in countries other than the U.S.A. In binary numbers, instead of counting upwards from 1 to 2, the counting has to jump all the way to 10, since there are no twos available, only zeroes and ones. Then, the third number is 11, and the fourth has to go all the way to 100, and so on. This is the heart of digital electronics. (More aspects of digital systems will be explained in later chapters. Even though modem transistors can also be set to any voltage in-between zero and one, there are still great advantages to the binary system, such as its vastly decreased susceptibility to random errors ( noise ). Impurities in a corrodent can be good or bad from a corrosion standpoint. An impurity in a stream may act as an inhibitor and actually retard corrosion. However, if this impurity is removed by some process change or improvement, a marked rise in corrosion rates can result. Other impurities, of course, can have very deleterious effec ts on materials. The chloride ion is a good example small amounts of chlorides in a process stream can break down the passive oxide film on stainless steels. The effects of impurities are varied and complex. Eutectics and eutectoids are important. They are common in engineering alloys, and allow the production of special, strong, microstructures. Peritectics are less important. But you should know what they are and what they look like, to avoid confusing them with other features of phase diagrams. [Pg.346]

If hazards are still present, try to reduce the necessity for performing the job or the frequency of performing it. Go over the recommendations with all employees performing the job.
