Waterproofing component

Most of these membranes are composed of mastic, which is the waterproofing component, and reinforcing fabrics which give the membranes the desired physical properties. [Pg.566]

Type of Reinforcements. Conventional roofing felts are made of organic fibers and are impregnated with asphalt. They act as binders and as reinforcement in the waterproofing component in the BUR. In recent years, non-woven fabrics have made significant inroads in roofing in addition to many other fields, such as the geotextile and medical fields. [Pg.567]

The heaviest products obtained directly from oil arc lubricants, waxes, asphalt, and coke. These products have both domestic and industrial uses. Lubricants, for example, are applied in the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment and machinery. Asphalt, because it is not reactive to chemicals in the environment, is a superb material of construction in the building of roads and in roofing. It is also used in the waterproofing of concrete, the manufacture of black paints, and as a material lor tire threads, battery housing, electrical insulation, and other applications. The heaviest of all the petroleum products, coke, is used extensively as a major component of industrial electrodes and as a commercial fuel. [Pg.943]

A number of important resins are composed of triterpenoids, including the dammar resins which derive from a sub-family of the family Dipterocarpaceae. Dammar resins are fluid, balsamic oleoresins highly suited for caulking and waterproofing. Frankincense (olibanum) is known as a gum-resin collected from various Boswellia spp. and contains amyrin epimers and triterpenoid acids. The gum component is polysaccharide in origin and is water soluble. The Anacardiaceae family contains the genus Pistacia (Mills and White, 1977 21 Mills and White, 1989). [Pg.241]

Other uses for depolymerized PET bottles have been investigated. Used bottles have been glycolized and then used to make unsaturated polyester thermosets and polyol components in rigid polyurethane foam. Evco Research announced in 1999 its EvCote waterproof coatings and adhesives based on recycled PET [17, 18]. [Pg.571]

If the total elapsed time between original acceptance of any detonator (or primer) lot and assembly of that lot into the ammunition component with which it is issued exceeds two months or if the detonators (or primers) have been subjected to adverse conditions at any time since previous tests, the lot shall be subjected to, and must satisfactorily pass, the check test for sensitivity and waterproofness as described above. Should any lot fail the retests it shall be rejected... [Pg.1089]

Waterproofness Test. The following test is contained in Military Standard-Fuze and Fuze Components, Environmental and Performance Tests for , MIL-STD-331A (15 Oct 1976). This standard establishes uniform environment and performance tests for use in the development and production of US fuzes and fuze components. Its purpose is to provide engineering in-... [Pg.320]

Stearamidomethylpyridinium chloride is used in waterproofing textiles. It is made by reacting pyridine hydrochloride with stearamide and formaldehyde. Vmylpyridines are used as components of acrylonitrile copolymers to improve the dyeability of polyacrylonitrile fibers. Tile commercially important products are 2-vinylpyndine 4-vinylpyndine and 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine. Formulas are shown below. [Pg.1388]

Single component systems rely in most cases for the cure to take place by the reaction of moisture in the air with the prepolymer to form a solid polymer. Carbon dioxide gas is given off during this reaction and either escapes into the air or is trapped by fillers in the system. These systems are used to make waterproof barriers and single pack polyurethane paints. [Pg.267]

Methyl-branched alkanes function as an arrestant in the housefly pheromone (Adams and Holt, 1987 Nelson el al., 1981). They are abundant components of the insect cuticular lipids (Nelson and Blomquist, 1995) where they function in waterproofing (Gibbs, 1998) and serve in chemical communication (Blomquist et al., 1993, 1998). [Pg.239]

We know the most about cuticular hydrocarbons, because they are abundant and because it is relatively easy to isolate and identify them. They are also the most hydrophobic lipid components, and so should provide the best barrier to water-loss. -Alkanes isolated from insect cuticles typically have chain lengths of 20-40 carbons. These can be modified by insertion of cis double bonds, or addition of one or more methyl groups. Relatively polar surface lipids include alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and wax esters (see Chapter 9). Given this diversity, is it possible to predict lipid phase behavior (and, by extension, waterproofing characteristics) from composition alone If so, a large body of literature would become instantly interpretable in the context of water balance. Unfortunately, this is not the case. [Pg.106]

Because of their many characteristics, especially harmlessness for human body, they have been widely used in pharmaceutics (bases and components for medicines, antifoaming agents in some processes, waterproof-ers for equipment and containers). [Pg.472]

Liquid polyurethane waterproofing systems are coal-tar modified products. Two-component materials are catalysed curing systems, and one-component materials are cured by exposure to moisture. Both the materials exhibit comparable properties on complete curing. Two-component materials require on-site mixing of the components. One-component materials can be applied directly, but the problem with this type is polymerisation of the product inside the container if it is improperly sealed. Such products are purged with an inert gas when the pack is sealed. [Pg.93]

Key components of SSG are glass (clear, tinted, reflective, laminated, insulating), framing (anodised aluminium, coated aluminium, stainless steel) and, of course, silicone sealant as the preferred choice. The function of the sealant in the SSG system is to provide structural durability and waterproofing. [Pg.136]

Silanes exhibit hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. The molecule has both a non-polar and a polar component. The non-polar organic alkyl group is the vehicle for the water-repellent action. The effectiveness, durability and stability of the waterproofing agent depends on the size and nature of this group (Huls, 1991). [Pg.148]
