Under the pressure of progressively more stringent government regulations with regard to permissible levels of residual NH and urea content in wastewaters, the fertilizer industry made an effort to improve wastewater treatment (see also Water, sewage). 

Methane also is commonly produced by the decomposition of organic matter by a variety of bacterial processes, and the gas is used as a fuel in sewage plants (see Water, sewage). Methane also is called marsh gas because it is produced during the decay of vegetation in stagnant water. 

Environmental Uses. Next to steel fluxing, environmental uses of lime are the biggest market, accounting for 24% of total lime consumption. These uses include air pollution control, water, sewage, and industrial wastewater treatment, hazardous waste treatment, etc. 

Another standard test, which is much simpler and more convenient, is the membrane filter technique. A suitable volume of sample is filtered through a sterile, 0.45-p.m membrane filter. The filter is placed in a petri dish containing a specific growth medium (M-Endo nutrient broth, M-Endo medium) and incubated for 24 h at 35°C. If after this time the colonies show the characteristic green sheen, this is taken as positive evidence for the presence of the coliform group (see Water, sewage).

Since buried pipes for water, sewage and gas are a major use of cast iron, the corrosion of buried iron structures needs special consideration in any study of the corrosion properties of cast iron. It is also a very complex topic that is not fully understood.
