Various methods have been employed to overcome this difficulty. For example, a method used by Chemical Abstracts involves naming the dihydro derivative of the heterocyclic ketone (or imine or exocyclic alkene) form, and adding the words mesoionic didehydro derivative (example 131). Hydrochloric acid. Strong acids are used frequently for the purpose of sample dissolution when water will not do the job. One of these is hydrochloric acid, HC1. Concentrated HC1 is actually a saturated solution of hydrogen chloride gas, fumes of which are very pungent. Such a solution is 38.0% HC1 (about 12 M). Hydrochloric acid solutions are used especially for dissolving metals, metal oxides, and carbonates not ordinarily dissolved by water. On the Theory of Steam Distillation.—The ideal case occurs when the substance to be distilled is insoluble, or, more accurately, sparingly soluble in water (examples toluene, bromobenzene, nitrobenzene) so that the vapour pressures of water and the substance do not affect each other, or hardly so. The case of substances which are miscible with water (alcohol, acetic acid) is quite different and involves the more complicated theory of fractional distillation. Let us consider the first case only and take as our example bromobenzene, which boils at 155°. If we warm this liquid with water, its vapour pressure will rise in the manner shown by its own vapour pressure curve and independently of that of water. Ebullition will begin when the sum of the vapour pressures of the two substances has become equal to the prevailing atmospheric pressure. This is the case, as we can find from the vapour pressure curves, at 95-25° under a pressure of 760 mm. [Pg.29]

Anhydride. A chemical compound derived from an acid by elimination of the atoms that make up water. Example SO3, sulfur trioxide, is the anhydride of sulfuric acid, H2SO4. Anhydrides are a class of organic compounds derived from the combination of two carboxylic acids (R-COOH) by. elimination of a molecule of water. In nonporous membranes, diffusion occurs as it would in any other nonporous solid. However, the molecular species must first dissolve into the membrane material. This step can oftentimes be slower than the diffusion, such that it is the rate-limiting step in the process. As a result, membranes are not characterized solely in terms of diffusion coefficients, but in terms of how effective they are in promoting or limiting both solubilization and diffusion of certain molecular species or solutes. When the solute dissolves in the membrane material, there is usually a concentration discontinuity at the interface between the membrane and the surrounding medium (see Figure 4.55).
