Scale-Up and Operation Scale-up of pharmaceutical mixer granulators is difficult because geometric similarity is often not preserved. Kristensen recommends constant relative swept volume ratio... [Pg.1895]

Power dissipation can lead to temperature increases of up to 40°C in the mass. Note that evaporation of liquid as a result of this increase needs to be accounted for in determining liquid requirements for granulation. Liquid should be added through an atomizing nozzle to aid uniform hquid distribution in many cases. In addition, power intensity (kW/kg) has been used with some success to judge granulation end point and for scale-up, primarily due to its relationship to granule deformation [Holm loc. cit.]. Swept volume ratio is a preliminary estimate of expected power intensity. [Pg.1895]

The construction of multicylinder machines gives the opportunity to change the working swept volume by taking cylinders out of service with valve-lifting mechanisms. The ring plate suction valve which is located at the crown of a loose liner can be lifted by various... [Pg.40]

The screw compressor can be visualized as a development of the gear pump. For gas pumping, the rotor shapes are modified to give maximum swept volume and no clearance volume where the rotors mesh together, and the pitch of the helix is such that the inlet and outlet ports can be arranged at the ends instead of at the side. The solid portions of the screws slide over the gas ports to separate one stroke from the next, so that no extra inlet or outlet valves are needed. [Pg.49]

Halocarbon systems are almost invariably controlled by mechanical or electronic thermostatic expansion valves, requiring a superheat signal to operate the control. The superheating of the suction gas into the compressor will cause it to expand, resulting in a lower mass flow for a given swept volume. Reduction of the superheat setting of the expansion valve will therefore result in better use of the compressor. The limit will be reached when there is insufficient signal to work the expansion valve. [Pg.358]

The theoretical delivery of a piston pump is equal to the total swept volume of the cylinders. The actual delivery may be less than the theoretical value because of leakage past the piston and the valves or because of inertia of the valves. In some cases, however, the actual discharge is greater than theoretical value because the momentum of the liquid in the delivery line and sluggishness in the operation of the delivery valve may result in continued delivery during a portion of the suction stroke. The volumetric efficiency, which is defined as the ratio of the actual discharge to the swept volume, is normally greater than 90 per cent. [Pg.317]

In practice, it is not possible to expel the whole of the gas from the cylinder at the end of the compression the volume remaining in the cylinder after the forward stroke of the piston is termed the clearance volume. The volume displaced by the piston is termed the swept volume, and therefore the total volume of the cylinder is made up of the clearance... [Pg.351]

In the early days, see, e.g., Bakker and Van den Akker (1994a), a black box representing the impeller swept volume was often used in RANS simulations, with boundary conditions in the outflow of the impeller which were derived from experimental data. The idea behind this approach was that such nearimpeller data are hardly affected by the rest of the vessel and therefore could be used throughout. Generally, this is not the case of course. Furthermore, this approach necessitates the availability of accurate experimental data, not only... [Pg.178]
