Vision Express

Time can be used to win orders by companies who have learned that some customers do not want to wait - and are prepared to pay a premium to get what they want quickly. An example is Vision Express, which offers prescription spectacles in about one hour. Technicians machine lenses from blanks on the premises. Staff are given incentives to maintain a 95 per cent service level against the one-hour target. Vision Express has been successful in the marketplace by re-engineering the supply chain so that parts and information can flow rapidly from one process to the next. Compare this with other opticians in the high street, who must send customer orders to a central factory. Under the remote factory system, orders typically take about 10 days to process. An individual customer order is first dispatched to the factory. It then has to join a queue with orders from all the other high street branches around the country. Once the order has been processed, it must return to the branch that raised the order. While this may... [Pg.17]

The editors express their appreciation to the many international authors and reviewers who contributed to the Design Guidebook. It is clearly the volunteer efforts of these dedicated individuals that have made the publication of this first edition of the Industrial Ventilation Design Guidebook a reality. We have enjoyed working with this truly outstanding team of scientists and researchers who have been committed to our vision to produce an international handbook of the highest quality in the field of industrial ventilation. [Pg.1545]

Vitamin A (retinol), present in carnivorous diets, and the provitamin (P-carotene), found in plants, form retinaldehyde, utilized in vision, and retinoic acid, which acts in the control of gene expression. Vitamin D is a steroid prohormone yielding the active hormone derivative calcitriol, which regulates calcium and phosphate metaboUsm. Vitamin D deficiency leads to rickets and osteomalacia. [Pg.497]

Noting that the written record should be intelligibly prepared so that others may benefit from its study (26), Crowley urged readers to examine a sample from an advanced student published in the same issue of The Equinox. He boldly asserted that the more scientific the record is, the better (26). He also cautioned that The A.A. will not take official notice of any experiments which are not thus properly recorded (25). The vision of scientific method that Crowley expressed in The Equinox would certainly have conformed to his own education in scientific research under Ramsay and Collie at London and at Cambridge. For Crowley, scientific illuminism would be characterized by meticulous and objective record keeping of laboratory experiments, a concern about possible sources of error, the broader research community s access to other scientists research results, and the sanctioning of practices by an authorizing body. [Pg.47]

Vitamin A has a rich associated human physiology. It is associated with vision, regulation of gene expression, reproduction, embryo development, and immune function. We cannot manage all of this but let s get started with vision. [Pg.193]

Like all alchemists, Zosimos followed his dreams and visions in his search for the basic material of the universe, and he experienced mysterious archetypal images of sacrifice and transformation. He conceived of the idea of the god-man, who fell into cosmic matter, from which he had to be freed by alchemy, a vision that is similar to the one expressed in the Hermetica. This mystical element of alchemy combined with the metallurgical recipes made for an exotic combination. Another early alchemical work, the Codex Marcianus, contains a translated text that asserts that it was written by Isis to her son Horus. In it she tells him the secret of making gold and silver, a secret she coerced from angels. [Pg.76]

Adverse reactions are related to the iodine content of the drug the toxicity is often expressed as skin reactions, thyroid enlargement, and interference with thyroid function studies. Headache and diarrhea also occur. Chronic use of clioquinol, a closely related agent, has been linked to a myelitislike illness and to optic atrophy with permanent loss of vision. [Pg.609]

Many of us are too shy to express our wishes. So be it—but let s not grow hardened to our own secret wishes. Knowing and expressing dreams and wishes is first step to realizing them. Your wishes are your muses, your sources of inspiration. In his famous I Have a Dream speech in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. moved an entire nation to aspire to his vision of freedom and equality for all. [Pg.161]
