It has often been suggested that industrialization proceeded in three revolutionary waves. The first one started in Britain in the 1760s and was characterized by the introduction of mechanized, power-driven textile machines. The development of the factory system saw the rapid movement of people from the country to the towns with consequent disruption of family life.
