Answers to the first question can be illustrated by giving some examples (see Table 1). Eastman Chemical reengineered its innovation process and doubled the value of its R D portfoho (71—74). A team at Eastman was asked to provide (/) an assessment of the then-current innovation process, (2) a vision of the ideal process, (J) a flow chart of the modified process, (4) measures of the process, and (5) key roles and responsibihties. The team identified four main subprocesses needs identification, concept development, implementation, and market development. 

The concept of a contact lens device for modifying the optical power of the eye was described by Leonardo da Vinci and later by Rene Descartes and Thomas Young. In 1823, Sir John Herschel described the appHcation of a contact lens device specifically for the purpose of correcting vision. The first contact lens was fitted to a human eye for correction of vision in 1888. The early lenses were made of blown or molded glass and were difficult to wear. 

Now we are going to review the types of evidence that form the basis for belief in the atomic theory. We shall include a number of experiments that are close, in concept, to the direct vision type. These are particularly convincing and they provide detailed information that is less readily obtained in other ways. 

Because nonmetals do not form monatomic cations, the nature of bonds between atoms of nonmetals puzzled scientists until 1916, when Lewis published his explanation. With brilliant insight, and before anyone knew about quantum mechanics or orbitals, Lewis proposed that a covalent bond is a pair of electrons shared between two atoms (3). The rest of this chapter and the next develop Lewis s vision of the covalent bond. In this chapter, we consider the types, numbers, and properties of bonds that can be formed by sharing pairs of electrons. In Chapter 3, we revisit Lewis s concept and see how to understand it in terms of orbitals. 

Use the concepts of Curriculum Emphases and the framework of Normal Chemistry Education as instmments to articulate the new vision on the chemistiy curriculum in terms of design criteria, i.e. a new conjectural vision to be operationalised by the design of exemplars of the teaching material in the formal (designed) curriculum. 

Be aware of, anticipate and avoid the Normal Chemistiy Education reflex, i.e. the introduction into design and teaching of more chemical concepts than are needed for the chosen curriculum emphasis. Alternatively, deal in time with any difficulties related to the dominant school chemistiy curriculum at all stages of development, starting with the initial vision and the first design of the curriculum.

In the conventional vision, product quality is mainly based on external, nutritive and sensory properties and is strongly directed by traders and trends. Besides tastiness and ripeness, organic consumers expect products to have properties such as vitality and coherence , which are not easy to define and thus to explain and transfer. In the past, experimental parameters have been proposed to estimate vitality and coherence , but they were neither scientifically validated nor related to a validated quality concept with relation to human health. 

As the new atomic science, through ever more sophisticated detectors, opened a realm that could not be directly perceived by the physical senses, occult chemistry offered an alternative, a mode of scientific experimentation that could attempt to claim legitimacy through its scientific writing, charts, and visual illustrations of data while it also connected the human psyche to the subatomic world through a direct form of perception—that is, clairvoyance. So that those who will maintain the code after you will understand your concepts, and update it in accordance with your vision. 

As already mentioned, the glucoamylase project was chosen to illustrate Emil Fischer s lock and key concept for enzyme specificity. It is seen that his vision has become unequivocally established. Many other developments could have been chosen, as can be appreciated from recent reviews by Hehre (54) and by Svensson (55). Comforth (56) provided a fine overview of asymmetry and enzyme action in his Nobel prize lecture. Noteworthy is the conclusion that stereospecificity is something not just incidental, but essential to enzyme catalysis. In other words, the key must fit the lock. 

The technology concepts first introduced in Autonomy and then Hy-wire have become more authentic in the Sequel which demonstrates the vision that fuel cells are the ultimate answer. GM, along with others, has been working at reinventing the auto. GM developed its AUTOnomy and Hy-wire concept cars. Now, with the fuel cell Sequel, GM has been able to double the range and half the 0-60 mph acceleration of these cars in less than three years. 

The Vision 21 program is focused on new concepts for coal-based energy production where modular plants could be configured to produce a variety of fuels and chemicals depending on market needs with virtually no environmental impact outside the plant s footprint. Membranes would be used to separate oxygen from air for the gasification process and to separate hydrogen and carbon dioxide from coal gas.
