Teaching materials

It is therefore hoped that this present series of textbooks will prove to be a useful and valuable source of teaching material, both for individual students and for teachers of science courses. 

Use the concepts of Curriculum Emphases and the framework of Normal Chemistry Education as instmments to articulate the new vision on the chemistiy curriculum in terms of design criteria, i.e. a new conjectural vision to be operationalised by the design of exemplars of the teaching material in the formal (designed) curriculum. 

Despite these hopes and ideas, the amount of concrete teaching material available is fairly low. Some synoptic and carefully commented presentations of historical debates (e.g. Minssen Walgenbach, 1985) and some teaching units are available (for example Jansen et al., 1995 Matuschek Jansen, 1985 Masson Vazquez-... 

Arguments against this rather simple way of proceeding can be based on the fact that the histoiy of chemistiy is simplified too far in order to produce suitable teaching material. Scientific developments are ripped out of their historical context and sometimes rudely simplified. Other concepts, like the historical problem-centred... 

Consistent with the principles of the Life - Observations - Notations (LON) approach, a common teaching unit Chemical Reactions with accompanying teaching materials about chemical reactions in the primary sehools was developed and implemented by the partieipating teaehers. During the implementation of the LON approaeh, refleetive diaries were completed by the teachers.

Chemical engineering has traditionally focused on commodity chemicals in its research and education. Most of its teaching materials are related to the design of chemical plants and petroleum refineries. Although much has been achieved by Cussler and Moggridge, and Seider, Seader and Lewin in their books to fill this void, more needs to be done to cover the numerous product areas. Most importantly, we have to clearly identify, and to develop if necessary, all the principles, skills and tools that the chemical engineers should know in order to perform on their job in various product sectors. 

The low popularity of chemistry at our secondary schools has various causes for example, a too-extensive curriculum and unsatisfactory selection of the teaching material. Teachers often neglect experiments. There is no clear boundary between the chemistry teaching at primary and secondary schools. It seems indispensable to bring the program of chemistry education at the both types of school closer to everyday hfe, including a reasonable proportion of the theory at secondary schools (Pacak, 1994). 

The main changes from the first edition are two new chapters Chapter 2 on X-ray diffraction and Chapter 3 on preparative methods. A short discussion of symmetry elements has been included in Chapter 1. Other additions include an introduction to ALPOs and to clay minerals in Chapter 7 and to ferroelectrics in Chapter 9. We decided that there simply was not enough room to cover the Phase Rule properly and for that we refer you to the excellent standard physical chemistry texts, such as Atkins. We hope that the book now covers most of the basic undergraduate teaching material on solid state chemistry.

The teachers of the school produced a set of lecture notes which were used as the basic teaching material. The set was distributed to the students at the start of the school. There has also been a considerable demand for these notes outside the summer schools. This is the reason why we are now publishing part of them in the present form. It should be emphasized, though, that the material in this book does not cover all the topics presented at the school. Such topics as integrals and integral derivatives, SCF theory, many body perturbation theory, and intermolecular forces, have for various reasons not been included. Some of this material will be published separately. Most of the exercise material has also been omitted. 

Paul H.W. Bormans was born in 1945 in Hengelo, Netherlands. After his education in chemistry at the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands, he became a teacher at a school for laboratory personel. His extensive interest in natural sciences resulted in a number of books about mineralogy and the environment. In the years 1980-1985 he worked on the integration of natural sciences in his school. He started to teach ceramics at the department material technology of his school. The basis of his teaching materials is the scope of this book. 

The website accompanying this book, www.catalysisbook.org, features additional teaching material (exercises, answers, and lecture slides). It also contains a searchable list of the all the references, each with its corresponding digital object identifier (DOI) hyperlink. Access to this website is free of charge.

Collectively, these five elements make up what CORD, the developer of the ABC series, refers to as the REACT methodology, named after the acronym for the five elements encompassed. CORD s teaching materials are specifically designed to support constructivism in the classroom by facilitating the creation of learning environments in which these five elements are encouraged. When the REACT methodology is used effectively, students do not just remember, they understand. 

In September, 2 months after the ECT, Mrs. Williams tried to return to teaching but quit after 2 weeks. She could not remember the books or teaching materials she had been using for several years. The principal, who had started at the school a year earlier, looked like a stranger to her. She had trouble recognizing most of her previous students, including some who had been in music class with her for several years. 

The format of this book is based primarily on the late Professor L.C. Terriere s unpublished teaching material entitled The Biochemistry and Toxicology of Insecticides (1982). We talked about the possibility of coauthoring a new textbook in insecticide toxicology because of the clear need for such material. Unfortunately, he passed away before it could materialize. Therefore, I dedicate this book to Professor Terriere in appreciation of his valuable contributions to insect toxicology and biochemistry, and the many years of research association. 

The Internet has become an increasingly important medium for publishing and sharing green chemistry educational materials, and as Internet access in developing countries continues to improve, web-based educational materials are likely to be more easily accessible and more widely adopted than textbooks.
