The purpose of the abstract is to inform, to give away the punch line right at the start, and to let your readers decide whether they want to read the full document. Scientific writing is not like mystery writing in which the results are hidden until the end.

Nominalizations are common in scientific writing because, in most instances, they are more concise. 

In scientific writing, passive voice is often used to describe experimental procedures (see chapter 3). It is also used to shift the emphasis from the researcher to the research (i.e., from the scientist to the science). The hints provided here will help you avoid some common mistakes made by novice writers when using passive voice. 

Then and than have very different meanings nonetheless, novice writers often mistakenly use them interchangeably. To communicate without ambiguity, it is important that these two words be used properly. Essentially, you need to memorize which one is which and then use them correctly in your written work. Note that then is used only sparingly in expert scientific writing because the order of events (e.g., first, second, then) is generally implied and does not need to be stated explicitly.

In 1789 Lavoisier and his colleagues began publishing a new journal called Annales de chimie. They founded it, not as a vehicle for anti-phlogiston propaganda, but because they wanted a journal in which papers could be published quickly. Parallelism. Because much of the data in an NDA involves comparisons of one group to another, parallel structure is important in presenting the data. Style books for scientific writing will supply good examples of this concept. 

Every writer has a personal style, but all good writing tends to observe guidelines and conventions that communicate meaning clearly and exactly to readers. Scientific writing, in particular, must be precise and unambiguous to be effective.

A dangling modifier is a modifying word or phrase that does not clearly and logically modify another word in the sentence. In scientific writing, the passive voice is often necessary ( the solutions were heated melting points were determined ), but its use can lead to dangling modifiers.
