Viscosity emulsifiers

Emulsions and foams are two other areas in which dynamic and equilibrium film properties play a considerable role. Emulsions are colloidal dispersions in which two immiscible liquids constitute the dispersed and continuous phases. Water is almost always one of the liquids, and amphipathic molecules are usually present as emulsifying agents, components that impart some degree of durability to the preparation. Although we have focused attention on the air-water surface in this chapter, amphipathic molecules behave similarly at oil-water interfaces as well. By their adsorption, such molecules lower the interfacial tension and increase the interfacial viscosity. Emulsifying agents may also be ionic compounds, in which case they impart a charge to the surface, which in turn establishes an ion atmosphere of counterions in the adjacent aqueous phase. For premix membrane emulsification, the factors influencing the emulsification results are the transmembrane pressure, repeated processing and the pore size of the membrane. Emulsion Process. The emulsion polymerization process utilizes water as a continuous phase with the reactants suspended as microscopic particles. This low viscosity system allows facile mixing and heat transfer for control purposes. An emulsifier is generally employed to stabilize the water insoluble monomers and other reactants, and to prevent reactor fouling. With SAN the system is composed of water, monomers, chain-transfer agents for molecular weight control, emulsifiers, and initiators. Both batch and semibatch processes are employed. Copolymerization is normally carried out at 60 to 100°C to conversions of - 97%. Lower temperature polymerization can be achieved with redox-initiator systems (51). [Pg.193]

Emulsion Adhesives. The most widely used emulsion-based adhesive is that based upon poly(vinyl acetate)—poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers formed by free-radical polymerization in an emulsion system. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is typically formed by hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl acetate). The properties of the emulsion are derived from the polymer employed in the polymerization as weU as from the system used to emulsify the polymer in water. The emulsion is stabilized by a combination of a surfactant plus a coUoid protection system. The protective coUoids are similar to those used paint (qv) to stabilize latex. For poly(vinyl acetate), the protective coUoids are isolated from natural gums and ceUulosic resins (carboxymethylceUulose or hydroxyethjdceUulose). The hydroHzed polymer may also be used. The physical properties of the poly(vinyl acetate) polymer can be modified by changing the co-monomer used in the polymerization. Any material which is free-radically active and participates in an emulsion polymerization can be employed. Plasticizers (qv), tackifiers, viscosity modifiers, solvents (added to coalesce the emulsion particles), fillers, humectants, and other materials are often added to the adhesive to meet specifications for the intended appHcation. Because the presence of foam in the bond line could decrease performance of the adhesion joint, agents that control the amount of air entrapped in an adhesive bond must be added. Biocides are also necessary many of the materials that are used to stabilize poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions are natural products. Poly(vinyl acetate) adhesives known as "white glue" or "carpenter s glue" are available under a number of different trade names. AppHcations are found mosdy in the area of adhesion to paper and wood (see Vinyl polymers). [Pg.235]

Larch gum is readily soluble in water. The viscosity of these solutions is lower than that of most other natural gums and solutions of over 40% soHds are easily prepared. These highly concentrated solutions are also unusual because of their Newtonian flow properties. Larch gum reduces the surface tension of water solutions and the interfacial tension existing in water and oil mixtures, and thus is an effective emulsifying agent. As a result of these properties, larch gum has been used in foods and can serve as a gum arabic substitute. [Pg.436]

Nonionie Detergents. Nonionic surfactants rarely are used as the primary cleansing additives ia shampoos. They are generally poor foaming, but have value as additives to modify shampoo properties, eg, as viscosity builders, solubilizers, emulsifiers, and conditioning aids. [Pg.450]

The fluid is formulated from a premium mineral od-base stock that is blended with the required additive to provide antiwear, mst and corrosion resistance, oxidation stabdity, and resistance to bacteria or fungus. The formulated base stock is then emulsified with ca 40% water by volume to the desired viscosity. Unlike od-in-water emulsions the viscosity of this type of fluid is dependent on both the water content, the viscosity of the od, and the type of emulsifier utilized. If the water content of the invert emulsion decreases as a result of evaporation, the viscosity decreases likewise, an increase in water content causes an increase in the apparent viscosity of the invert emulsion at water contents near 50% by volume the fluid may become a viscous gel. A hydrauHc system using a water-in-od emulsion should be kept above the freezing point of water if the water phase does not contain an antifreeze. Even if freezing does not occur at low temperatures, the emulsion may thicken, or break apart with subsequent dysfunction of the hydrauHc system. [Pg.263]

Additives. Because of their versatility, imparted via chemical modification, the appHcations of ethyleneimine encompass the entire additive sector. The addition of PEI to PVC plastisols increases the adhesion of the coatings by selective adsorption at the substrate surface (410). PEI derivatives are also used as adhesion promoters in paper coating (411). The adducts formed from fatty alcohol epoxides and PEI are used as dispersants and emulsifiers (412). They are able to control the viscosity of dispersions, and thus faciHtate transport in pipe systems (413). Eatty acid derivatives of PEI are even able to control the viscosity of pigment dispersions (414). The high nitrogen content of PEIs has a flame-retardant effect. This property is used, in combination with phosphoms compounds, for providing wood panels (415), ceUulose (416), or polymer blends (417,418) with a flame-retardant finish. [Pg.13]

Monomers. A wide variety of monomers can be used, and they are chosen on the basis of cost and abiUty to impart specific properties to the final product. Water solubiUties of iadustriaHy important monomers are shown ia Table 1 (38). The solubiUty of the monomer ia water affects the physical chemistry of the polymerization. Functional monomers like methacrylic and acryUc acid, infinitely soluble ia water, are also used. These monomers impart long-term shelf stabiUty to latices by acting as emulsifiers. The polymerization behavior of some monomers, such as methacrylic acid, as well as the final latex properties are iafiuenced by pH. For optimum results with these acids, polymerization is best performed at a pH of ca 2. After polymerization, the latex is neutralized to give adequate shelf stabiUty at tractable viscosities. [Pg.24]

The viscosity of the latex can also be dependent on pH. In the case of some latices, lowering the pH with a weak acid such as glycine is an effective method for raising the viscosity without destabilising the system. Latices made with poly(vinyl alcohol) as the primary emulsifier can be thickened by increasing the pH with a strong alkaU. [Pg.28]

Chocolate (0.3—0.5% lecithin) lecithin is a wetting agent and emulsifier. It facihtates mixing, saves processiag time and power, saves cocoa butter, stabilizes viscosity, iacreases shelf life, counteracts moisture thickening, and aids release of molded goods (see Chocolate and cocoa). [Pg.104]

Batch Stirred Tank SO Sulfonation Processes. If the color of the derived sulfonate is not critical, such as ia the productioa of oil-soluble ag-emulsifiers, a simple batch sulfoaatioa procedure can be employed based on vaporizing liquid SO (Niaol Labs, 1952) (13,263). Pilot Chemical Company adapted the original Morrisroe 60—70% oleum—SO2 solvent sulfonation process (256) to utilize 92% Hquid SO —8% Hquid SO2 mixtures, and more recently usiag 100% Hquid SO. This cold sulfoaatioa low viscosity sulfoaatioa process produces exceUeat quaHty products, and reportedly has also been adapted for continuous processiag as weU. The derived sulfonic acid must be stripped of SO2 solvent after completing sulfonation and digestion. [Pg.86]

Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. As cross-linker PMDI can be used, which has a shelf life of 5 to 6 h in water. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.350]

Partially hydrolyzed grades are used in many cosmetic appHcations for their emulsifying, thickening, and film-forming properties. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is also used as a viscosity builder for aqueous solutions and dispersions. [Pg.489]

Flavors, emulsifiers, or cocoa butter are often added during conching. The flavoring materials most commonly added in the United States are vanillin, a vanillalike artificial flavor, and natural vanilla (25) (see Flavors AND SPiCEs). Cocoa butter is added to adjust viscosity for subsequent processing. [Pg.95]

Standardizing. In standardizing or finishing, emulsifiers and cocoa butter are added to the chocolate to adjust viscosity to final specifications. [Pg.95]

Lecithin (qv), a natural phosphoHpid possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, is the most common emulsifier in the chocolate industry (5). The hydrophilic groups of the lecithin molecules attach themselves to the water, sugar, and cocoa soflds present in chocolate. The hydrophobic groups attach themselves to the cocoa butter and other fats such as milk fat. This reduces both the surface tension, between cocoa butter and the other materials present, and the viscosity. Less cocoa butter is then needed to adjust the final viscosity of the chocolate. [Pg.95]
