If the color of the derived sulfonate is not critical, such as ia the productioa of oil-soluble ag-emulsifiers, a simple batch sulfoaatioa procedure can be employed based on vaporizing liquid SO (Niaol Labs, 1952) (13,263). Pilot Chemical Company adapted the original Morrisroe 60—70% oleum—SO2 solvent sulfonation process (256) to utilize 92% Hquid SO —8% Hquid SO2 mixtures, and more recently usiag 100% Hquid SO. The derived sulfonic acid must be stripped of SO2 solvent after completing sulfonation and digestion.

Isocure A process for making foundry molds developed by Ashland Chemical Company. In 1990 it was announced that a pilot plant was to be built in cooperation with the USSR and that the process had been licensed in China. See also Pep Set. 

PCC [Partial combustion cracking] Not to be confused with precipitated calcium carbonate. A process for cracking crude petroleum or heavy oil to a mixture of olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons. The heat carrier is steam, produced by the partial combustion of the feed. Developed by Dow Chemical Company. It was piloted in 1979 and a larger plant was built in Freeport, TX, in 1984. 

An interesting variety of the organization scheme is the combination of the positions of head of business development and R D in one and the same person. It eliminates the above mentioned friction. This structure is particularly suitable for small to midsize fine-chemical companies, where the total number of researches and business development managers does not exceed 10. The ideal candidate for this position is a scientist with several years of experience in industrial R D and pilot plant production, plus a commercial flair. 

In the mid Eighties, 99 batch processes within 74 UK companies were identified (Parakrama, 1985). In the last decade or more a continuous shift towards batch processes has been noticed and many small-scale companies are using their existing continuous columns for batch distillation (Willet, 1995) without much realising the implications of such practice. Also R D sections of many multi-national chemical companies do the pilot plant study in CBD columns for their continuous distillation columns which are in operation in the plant (Chen, 1995 Jenkins, 2000 Greaves, 2003). Because of confidentiality the results of such studies are not available in public.

These pilot-plant tests require large quantities of good quality solvent. We had 50L of distilled DHDECMP prepared by Bray Oil Company (1925 N. Mariana Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif., 90032) starting with Wateree Chemical Company crude DHDECMP. Bray used their CVC Pilot-15 centrifugal molecular still for the distillation. Bray has just recently produced 200L of distilled DHDECMP from a batch of crude that they manufactured. This is the first time we have been able to purchase DHDECMP that is ready for extraction use.
